Chapter Text
+1. The Quarry
"Mike, are you sure you can handle all of that? I can help you, I have arms." Will waves his hands around, showcasing his empty arms as Mike struggles to carry a picnic basket, giant blanket, and a boombox to his car. Mike grumbles quietly, nearly tripping over his own feet. "No, I asked you out and I'm gonna do the work for it. You just sit there and look handsome, it gives me motivation."
Will sighs and can't help the laugh that escapes him as he decides to just sit on his porch steps and wait for Mike to pack everything up. They're going on a date at the quarry, Mike had asked Will earlier this week if he was interested, trying to act casual about it but failing as he ends up stuttering out the words and Will ends up asking if they're going on a date. Mike was bright red but happy with the outcome of that conversation and they ended up setting it up together.
Will watches with his chin resting on his hand, a smile making it's way on his face as Mike fights with the trunk door, the blanket caught in the latch without Mike noticing. Will giggles but says nothing and stands up to walk to the car just as Mike notices the blanket and groans, throwing the end of it in the bed of the trunk and finally getting it to close. "Okay! Are you ready?" Mike asks, excitement but nervousness on his grinning face. Will nods, heading towards the passenger side and watching as Mike gets in as well and starts the car before they're on their way to the quarry.

Mike parks the car right by the water, turning off the ignition and quickly getting out to start setting up their spot. Will hops out as well to help, grabbing the blanket from Mike quickly before running away, hearing Mike blow a raspberry from behind him. He giggles and throws the blanket out, laying it flat on the ground and finding large rocks to hold it at each corner, just in case. Mike comes by soon after with the basket and boombox in each hand, setting the basket in the middle while putting the boombox in a corner behind them.
Will sits down after everything is set up, leaning back on his hands and waiting for Mike to sit as well. Mike is about to before he seems to remember something and runs back to the car. Will watches Mike dig around in the backseats before returning with another blanket and a couple pillows. Will raises an eyebrow at them, "When did those get there? I never noticed." Mike grins, placing the blanket down and motions for Will to scoot over. "I put them in the car before I came to pick you up, I figured we could use the blanket if it gets cold, and the pillows are for us to sit on so it's more comfortable." Will smiles as Mike drops a pillow in his previous spot, sitting down and definitely feeling more comfortable on the plush material.
Glancing at the boombox, Will remembers the cassette that he put in before they left. "Let's turn this on, Jonathan made me a new mixtape recently." He leans over, pressing play and adjusting the volume as The Cure starts playing through the speakers. Mike grins as Boys Don't Cry plays, it's Will's favorite song right now. Will hums along quietly as he and Mike get all of their food and drinks out of the basket, mostly a large assortment of fruit, some cheese, and then water and soda.
Mike reaches for can of coke as he looks out at the quarry, watching the ripples in the water. "Are you still up for helping me with the new campaign tonight? I had a few more ideas on our way here that I thought would be cool." Will nods excitedly, leaning back on his hands. "Yeah, I'd love to! You always write the best stories, I'm sure whatever you came up with will be great. Everyone loves your campaigns."
A smile spreads across Mike's face, a subtle blush making it's way on his cheeks at the compliment, he loves knowing that his friends enjoy his creations. "I'm glad." Mike closes his eyes, content to just sit there with his boyfriend and enjoy the view. He lays back, putting his arms behind his head for support and basks in the slight breeze. Will searches for little plates in the basket but pauses as his eyes set on Mike, the sun is hitting his face and highlighting the dusting of freckles on his nose and cheeks. He looks so pretty and Will is sometimes in disbelief that he's dating Mike.
He can't believe it but it's real, Mike is real and-God, Will is wondering if it's too early to fall in love.
Feeling eyes on him, Mike squints his eyes open, catching Will looking at him with a slightly dazed look. "You okay?" He can't help but ask, not exactly sure why Will was looking at him like that. Will blinks and nods slowly, "Y-yeah, you're just-you look good today." Mike pauses and then sits up, skin pink but a teasing grin on his face.
"Awe, are you shy about complimenting me?" Mike reaches out and pinches Will's cheek gently, letting Will half-heartedly bat his hand away with an amused look in his eyes. "Shut up, you get the same way."
Mike nods his head, "Obviously, look at you! You're so handsome it should be a crime." Now it's Will's turn to blush. He waves his hand out at Mike, "Stop, I can't handle your charms right now." Mike giggles and leans closer, "What are you gonna do about it? I could compliment you all d-" Will is quick, giving Mike no time to react before a piece of honeydew is being shoved in his mouth, followed by an index finger being pressed against his lips.
"Shh," Will interrupts, fingers cold from the fruit. "Just eat and enjoy the view." Mike finishes the snack quickly, another grin forming after Will removes his finger, "I mean, if you say so, the view is great from this angle." Mike places his head on his palm, watching Will with a mischievous smile.
"Oh my god, you're unbelievable." Will laughs, scooting down to lay his head on the pillow and watch small groups of clouds float by slowly. He motions for Mike to come closer, arms opening in an invitation for cuddles. Obviously, Mike accepts the offer, laying down perpendicular to Will and placing his head on his chest. Will lays an arm over Mike's chest and Mike quickly chases it, tangling their fingers together. "You love it."
They lay in silence for who knows how long, just enjoying each others company and watching the clouds pass as R.E.M plays quietly in the background. Will breaks the silence first, voice quiet. "I really enjoy spending time with you, like this. It's nice, makes me forget about the real world for a bit." Mike twists his neck slightly to see Will clearly. He's playing with Will's fingers absentmindedly, a fond smile brightens his face. "Me too, life is so easy when I'm with you. Even gloomy days are worth looking forward to when I'm with you, you're like a walking ray of sunshine." Will chuckles, leave it to Mike to go all cheesy on him.
Will gently removes his hand from Mike's, bringing it up to lay on his cheek instead, stroking his cheekbone with his thumb. Mike moves to lay on his side, other cheek pressed against Will's chest, hearing his heartbeat thumping rhythmically under his ear. Will gently pulls his bottom lip into his mouth as he thinks, before he's pulling away slowly and leaning up on his elbows. Mike moves with him, arm coming out to support his torso over Will's body, hand placed on the ground by Will's waist.
Mike's eyes flicker between Will's, questioning but he doesn't ask anything. Instead, he waits for Will to initiate something. It doesn't take long before Will is moving again, hand coming up to Mike's neck and threading his fingers through the curly hair. Mike's breath hitches as his mind catches up to him, to their position. "Will.." Will glances down, eyes meeting slightly parted lips before flickering back up. They lock eyes, a nonverbal conversation between them. Mike adjusts himself above Will, settling down more comfortably and careful, not wanting to put all of his weight on Will. "Is it.. is this okay?" He's so nervous suddenly.
Will nods jerkily, swallowing heavily, "Ye-yeah." Mike smiles and leans down to press their foreheads together, "I wanna be clear.. is it okay for me to kiss you?" Mike brushes Will's bottom lip with his thumb, feeling the softness and imagining what they'll feel like pressed against his own. Will smiles, feeling himself nod once more, forehead brushing Mike's. "Yes, I promise. I want this. Please." He whispers, bringing a hand up to Mike's neck, tucking the fallen hair behind his ears.
Mike inhales a shaky breath, trying to gather his thoughts, there's no one around, it's finally gonna happen. Nothing will get in the way this time. He holds Will's cheek gently in his hand, taking a moment to just feel their closeness before he leans in a bit. "I swear to God, if Dustin or someone comes running out of nowhere, I'm gonna drive us out of s-"
"Mike." Will interrupts, a hushed giggle slipping past his lips. "I promise, nobody is going to interrupt us." Mike huffs a quiet laugh, "Yeah, you're right. Sorry, I just-" Will gives him a look, an amused smile on his lips, "Mike, stop talking." Mike looks at him, swallowing thickly and eyes flicking down. "Right, sorry."
Their laughter is caught in each others lips, sounds muffled and breathy. Will inhales sharply through his nose, carefully moving his lips over Mike's and leaning back against the pillows so he can wrap both of his arms around Mike's neck, pulling him closer. Mike can't help but sigh in relief, the feeling of Will's lips moving against his own is so much better than he could've ever imagined. Will's lips are soft and mold perfectly into Mike's. They're a little uncoordinated, but neither of them could care less, their only thoughts being 'finally'.
Will's eyebrows furrow slightly, heart thumping heavily as his lips disconnect from Mike's, only to reconnect again. They're slightly desperate, the quiet sound of their lips moving together can be heard just barely with the music in the background. Mike nibbles lightly on Will's bottom lip, soothing it immediately after and chuckling quietly at Will's noise of shock but enjoyment.
Mike holds onto Will's jaw softly, tilting his head up a bit to adjust the angle. Will lets out a little hum, relishing in Mike's lips before he forces himself to pull away, "Shit." They only lock eyes for a split second before erupting in giggles, bodies weak and Mike ends up toppling on top of Will, arms giving out on him. Will just laughs and wraps his arms tightly around Mike's shoulders, permanent smile on his face. "I swear, it felt like we've been trying for years. I'm surprised I haven't gone insane." Mike whines into Will's neck, pressing little kisses wherever he pleases. Will nods, "I agree, although it has only been, like, a week. But, I totally see what you mean, that took forever."
Mike lifts his face up from Will's neck, eyes shining, "I think we should play a prank on the party for when we come out to them." Will raises an eyebrow at the random exclamation, confused but intrigued. "Okay..? What's your plan?" Mike shakes his head, "No, no, no, I don't want to think about that right now. Let me kiss you again." He leans back down, cutting off Will's train of thought and swallowing his laughter.
They spend the next few hours at the quarry, kissing and giggling at nothing, the taste of honeydew on their lips.
