Chapter Text
It is lunchtime on Miles’ fourth day at a human school. He and Sonic are sitting together while they eat lunch, a little ways off to the side of the schoolyard, there are a few human children sitting nearby.
The fox isn’t really sure what the other kids are talking about, he hadn’t been following along. But then —
“I mean, Sonic’s cool , he’s blue and can run really fast. But the other one? The fox? He’s just…weird. I know he's an alien but those two tails are freaky !” a boy says loudly. Enough so that Miles can hear every word.
One of the boy’s mates — the one with the brown hair — slaps him on the arm, hard and tells him “that wasn’t nice,”
“Ow. What? Come on, even you’ve gotta agree that they’re weird,” the loud boy continues.
There are tears gathering in his eyes now. S onic hasn’t noticed what is going in, he’s still engrossed in his conversation with another student, one of his friends.
The brown-haired boy is looking at Miles now. The other boy follows his gaze. Realising that the fox has heard everything should have made him stop, it does the exact opposite.
T he loud boy now knows that he has Miles’ attention. “ Freak ,” he says, directly to the fox’s face.
That’s the last straw. He has flown halfway across the schoolyard before he even realises that he’s moved. The tears have developed into full-on crying.
Sonic had been deep in conversation with Donny when one of Miles’ tails smack him in the face. B y the time he turns around to see what has happened, his brother is already flying away. Flying away, in the middle of the schoolyard, at a speed that was just short of superspeed.
What happened?
More importantly, what did he miss?
The hedgehog glances around the space, trying to see what had upset Miles. The only thing that stands out is Jonny, the school bully, is looking like he has just received an A+ on a maths test.
Oh no.
By all means, he could go after Miles now but he’s already gotten two tardy marks this week and Tom told him that he wouldn’t be allowed to go to baseball practice this Saturday.
So Sonic is forced to stay in the classroom until the end-of-day bell rings. He spends one hour after lunch break thinking about how Miles must be doing.
During the break halfway through a brown-haired boy, one of Jonny’s friends, sits down in the seat beside the hedgehog and starts talking to him. The boy tells him what had happened at lunch, how Jonny had called Miles’ tails weird and called the fox himself a freak.
The bully is sitting across the room from Sonic and he wishes that he had the ability to cause his lightning to strike a certain someone just by thinking of him.
After another three-quarters of an hour of torture, the end-of-day bell rings and he is released. Sonic runs out of the classroom using his superspeed, grabs his bag on the way and is sitting in Tom’s car before the man has even pulled it to a stop.
The sheriff must know that Miles is already home as he doesn’t wait after Sonic has appeared (to him) in his car. The hedgehog doesn’t last the drive home, he hops out of the car to run the rest of the distance to the house.
Eventually, when they both get home, they are greeted by the heavenly smells of chocolate, mint, and baked bread.
