Just then, a new notification pinged on his screen, and Augustine’s heart leaped into his throat. His breath hitched as he saw the subject line: ‘In regards to your application status’. He froze for a split second before scrambling to click on the email, his eyes scanning the text with a frantic urgency.
Slowly, it loaded.
“Winnie, hold on a second,” Augustine said, his voice barely above a whisper, brimming with a mix of nerves and excitement.
And loaded.
“Auggie?” Winnie’s voice was tinged with a hint of something unfamiliar. Worry, maybe?
And loaded some more.
‘Congratulations! We are excited to inform you that you have been accepted into our university community as an Elk!’
“Holy shit,” Augustine finally blurted out. If his voice was trembling, Winnie didn’t mention it. “I got in.”

As much as Augustine wants his best friend to be happy, the feeling in his gut of Winnie finding someone hurts: good thing they have plenty to do before that though! He’s late.
Augustine huffs out a visible breath that curls like smoke in the cold atmosphere surrounding him, crossing his arms tight into one another as a shield from the light breeze hitting him. It's not biting, not even close, but standing still isn't doing him any favors. Even the soft brush of air against his cheeks is almost stinging. He checks his watch, sighs, and shoves his hands deep into the pockets of his coat, hiking his shoulders up to press the fuzzy lining of his ushanka harder against his ears.
In the past, he might have considered this a means of humiliation. Trying to make him feel small and silly, waiting for an extra hour for someone who doesn't care enough to be there on time. He knows better, now- his only concern is if the friend he's waiting for isn't getting lost in the newly renovated parts of the city. His phone hasn't pinged with a text yet, so hopefully the other is making it alright.
(winnie & auggie have a visit over winter break one year. it goes shockingly good, considering their track record with snow)
