Being the oldest meant a lot of things.
You had privileges your younger siblings didn't have, such as getting to stay up late, being the boss when no one was around, getting to try new things before them, and being able to get away with more stuff because you are older, you know better. The younger ones will always be the silly younger siblings who look up to their oldest, no matter what.
There were many more privileges he had, some he had yet to discover.
Apparently, being immune to illnesses while the little ones suffered was one of them.
