The Snafu thing has been going on for longer than six days, though not by much. Eugene feels the same kind of exhausted desire for it which he does for the drinking.

And that was the problem, wasn’t it? Eugene saw him prying teeth out of corpses and he saw that Snafu was never fazed by the terrors around him. Wouldn’t it be better to become like Snafu when that meant he didn’t have to feel the burden of the war anymore?

Even if there should be enough weighing on Snafu's conscience to haunt his dreams, he never suffered any nightmares. He hardened himself to function in the war, he didn't care if it was turning him insensitive in the long run. But maybe he cared if others tried to follow his lead. -

It seemed like a cozy little cafe, red checkered tablecloths, glowing jelly jar candles, silverware rolled up in napkins.
