I think my intentions with this story are not exactly a "Here's what REALLY happened" but like... historically witches (or even just female practitioners of medicine and midwifery) and scientists have to deal with a lot of ostracizing from society, so I felt like while "mad scientist and his witch accomplice" were the villains in the story Reinhardt told, they were probably a lot more sympathetic in the context of... I suppose the 16th/17th century??? I mean obviously Mercy's doing deals with demons but also there's a bit more nuance there since Yōkai aren't necessarily "Pure evil" like demons are perceived over in Europe. I also wanted to incorporate more of Mercy's actual character (who is kind-hearted and well-meaning) into Witch Mercy, so you end up with a Mercy who is most certainly a witch, but she's also the Mercy we know and love from the main storyline of Overwatch.
