This conversation is happening, with Sam trying to explain that enemies follow him even when he tries to stop, and all I can think is him saying "They take everyone." He left for Stanford and they came after him and took Jess, and I know that surely still haunts him. His mother, at least, is alive, but for a long time she wasn't and he probably blames himself for her death because of Azazel and the demon-blood, and then Jess, and others. Everyone he loves or who tried to help him died. Even Gabriel.
I wonder if they will deal with Gabriel dying for them and the guilt Sam probably felt for that. Guilt-riddled pup. Poor kid.
It occurred to me... and I don't know if this is your thought, but could Morpheus bother Dean for more than his size? I mean, yeah, giganto-doggie with teeth and probably one hell of a growl, but Dean's first death was by hellhound, and I wonder if the sound of dogs doesn't still bother him. Or maybe he's way over that because he's faced tons since, but it's a thought I've been having all day.
I'm curious. Why did Raphael speak Enochian during this conversation from the start, while Sam and Gabriel were still using English? I thought it might have been to protect angel!secrets from anyone still listening outside the angel guard (or just because the BMoL happened), but Gabriel didn't switch so he obviously wasn't concerned.
Him getting knocked into a pile of pillows while laughing was awesome, btw.
Sam definitely has a shit-ton of guilt and shame and burdens that he carries in terms of taking the blame for things that happened simply bc he *exists*. I'm pretty sure it's not even individual names and faces at this point. Like you said--"They take everyone." He's lost so many people--either to death or because they chose to leave. His fear of abandonment is actually going to be one of the main themes in this story. We'll touch on Jess some this story (possibly in the chapter I'm currently writing or a later one...we'll see how this one goes). I think Sam would feel some guilt over Gabriel's death, but I think he also respects Gabe's decision to stand against his brother for the right thing. I've always found that Sam's story parallels Gabriel much more than Lucifer. Sure, Sam's the second brother to the "older, obedient" brother, and decided to go against his father...but not for the same reasons. Sam left because he wanted MORE, and because his father (and possibly Dean to some extent) was trying to shape him into something he wasn't. He wanted to escape the control and the fighting (both hunt-fights and family fights). Canon tells us that the fighting between John and Sam escalated in his teenage years...and John's journal tells us that he suspected something was "wrong" with Sam several years before he left them (which I'm gonna say means a lot of John's desire to control Sam was bc he suspected Azazel did something to change him and he feared Sam was "dark" or might turn evil at some point...hence his last orders to Dean). Gabriel left for similar reasons. A family member is lost (Lucifer and Mary), and it changed the family for the worse. In-fighting between all the brothers and a Father who left meant a breakdown in Heaven. Gabe "noped" out of it all and ran away to earth. But even as the Trickster, he kept being the archangel of justice...just in his own way! He loved his family, and they broke him. And in the end, he sacrificed his life to save *people*. I think Sam respects Gabriel's story and decisions. He probably carries some ammount of guilt that Gabe died for THEM specifically (bc this is SAM we're talking about), but I don't think it's the same level of guilt he carries for others (Charlie, Jess, Kevin, etc).
Dean's discomfort with Morpheus' large size does initially stem a BIT from the hellhounds. But he's dealt with lots of dogs in canon (the only time he showed fear or discomfort that I remember is when he had ghost sickness in "Yellow Fever" with that little yorkie). I'm thinking Dean's real source of discomfort is from his lack of control and knowledge with the situation. Sammy's gaining a new friend who happens to be a supernatural creature that shapeshifts and talks (and HE can't hear him). It's gonna take him a bit to warm up to the idea. There may be a wee bit of jealousy there, but not a lot. Not when this dog obviously adores his brother and protects/helps him. Dean can't begrudge anyone who loves Sammy like that <3 (not in this story, anyway!)
Raphael will be switching to Enochian more often for a few reasons. One, he's trying to teach Sam the language and expand his vocabulary. Two, he wants Sam to associate the language with normal activities and not just trauma. Three, Raphael is far more used to speaking Enochian than English. Gabriel spent centuries or more on Earth and is used to speaking the language of the land. Plus, he's more prone to switching to Enochian if Sam does. Gabe's still a bit hesitant...wants Sam to take the lead with it. Raphael is a teacher...he's gonna start coaxing Sam to speak it more and correct him (gently of course) when he uses the wrong grammer. Plus, Raphael is thinking long-term. Enochian is the languange of Heaven and the Host. Sam is going to hear it a LOT (especially once he starts picking up long-range angel radio). He wants to desensitize Sam to the traumas associated with the language.
I actually hadn't planned on having the BMOL return to the bunker for more intense stuffs! I'll be taking the fight to THEM...and by me, I mean the HOST. ;)
