I literally re-read your comment several times in an attempt to just parse the pureness of it. Literally here I was, retrolling through this fic in an effort to parse why the next chapter wasn't working and coming up with ways to get myself back from future stuff that is still a ways off, when I get the email alert about your comment. I...do not know how to respond. So I'll try my best.
AU YES! So much of the AU. A lot of the AU. All OF THE AU! There is so much more planned beyond just where this story flows--backstory, OC's--SO MUCH WORLD BUILDING HAS GONE INTO THIS. So yes, this is definitely an AU and I'm glad it meets and blows expectations.
Blame TDOPFID by Directium for me suddenly finding the idea of making the Director into a likeable and flawed character a thing. That fic was such a godsend to me that I haven't been able to escape my thirst for good fic involving the Director ever since. Nothing compares, not even my portrayal, but I can't look at Dr. Leonard Church the same way ever since that fic. I just can't. He's such a flawed character, he was a good villian, a sad story, a cautionary tale and more. Even Roosterteeth's own canon for the guy actually has him as someone who isn't naturally some sort of morally reprehensible character--that's merely how the world began to perceive him after all of his sins--after CT's digging and her own bias being a member of the people Freelancer was fighting, technically. Of Carolina, of the Reds and Blues of Blood Gulch--there is so much more to the Director beyond what we really got to see, and I like exploring that.
Xi was a spur of the moment idea that popped up after my own cracks about Church basically being everyone's dad. So yeah.
The idea of Donut, Caboose, and Kai being Freelancers MAKES SO MUCH SENSE and it's awesome and I love it so yeah I'm including it.
Leonard cares a great deal about Alpha, and in a lot of ways Alpha cares a great deal about Leonard. They're really shitty at showing it. Also they are bound together in their respective grief--being the same man, and all that.
CHURCH AND CABOOSE AND WASH AND THE DIRECTOR ARE ALL PRECIOUS OKAY. Rats Nest was needed and IT IS ALL NEEDED AND ARGHHHH I still have feels about my own fic. Damn you for reminding me.
I'm glad you like the writing style, since it's fairly experimental for this story. I like toying around with how things get written together, so this has been a fun to play with. Also I always felt like Caboose was so much more, SO I MADE CABOOSE EVERYTHING. Test subject, SPARTAN, Freelancer...ah, Caboose. I love you. It does though make a lot of sense--Church pushes Caboose away just as much as he clings and the further RVB got the more caring he got toward Caboose, especially after how obviously damaged Caboose really was became apparent.
Washington and Epsilon are interesting. How Washington sees, remembers, and knows Epsilon is vastly different from the Epsilon we know from the show. Wash knows Epsilon as he was. The Epsilon of the show is what Epsilon became. This will be important as time goes on. You did get the quote right, though! "Who said you have any autonomy?" is what the Epsilon Wash saw says to him. Wash has been through a lot of shit--body autonomy is something he's still rediscovering as he hasn't actually had that for a while there.
