Comment on Of Kings and Bastards

  1. Ah, the dance of Varys and Littlefinger each trying to outdo the other in collecting secrets. I find Varys a fascinating character as you have written him. Can't wait to see how you will employ him. I noticed that little finger refers to Catelyn as Catelyn Tully instead of Stark. Still obsessed and wishing to ignore her marriage to a Stark as he once wished her betrothal to a Stark to end. What a pleasure to read your depiction of him assuming that his advances to Catleyn would be welcome and have the possibility of being returned. His obsession with her drive so much of his actions, that I am very glad you included that aspect with hearing his internal thoughts. How strange that and owner of brothels who depends on men's sexual appetites to enrich him also condemns Brandon and Ned (supposed) for infidelities to Catleyn. He really can't see his double standard at all, the slimy little sleazeball.

Your characterization of Maester Aemon is brilliant. Especially his comment that he sensed some power in Jon Snow. I have always wondered how Aemon viewed Jon, whether he was intrigued by Jon.

I am quite simply enthralled by this story. Well done indeed.

    1. I've come to think that half the reason Littlefinger set all these events in motion was to have Ned killed and Cat fall sobbing into his arms. And then was rather shocked when she pulled a knife on him at Renly's camp! He might be a little OOC here but he is such a sleaze!

He is the type that would not see a double standard there with his clients and Brandon/(supposedly) Ned. In his mind, he is noble and pure in intentions.

Aemon's sensing of something about Jon is sort of the same thing as Drogon not frying Jon when they encountered each other. I would think that it's part of the Valyrian magic with the Targaryens.
