Yeah, this was not really the most uplifting of fics :( Though I'm happy you think it's really well done! I'm also very glad I slowly chipped away at this over a few months, because it gave me time to think of more excuses that Loki would make for why no one was coming. And I could make it all that more depressing :)
One of my best ideas for this fic, I think, was when I figured out why Odin let Loki waste away all those years. Originally, Odin didn't feature at all, and then I thought I would give him a bit part, before deciding Thor would definitely confront Odin over this. But as I wrote the Thor & Odin scene, I found I didn't actually have a concrete reason until I came up Frigga's death. Because Odin - especially the Odin in Thor 2 - seemed like he would be very willing to give into his rage and let it drive his choices, and let himself become bitter, with very little room left for forgiveness (which sounds a bit like Loki, as others have said of that sentencing scene in Thor 2; but seeing as Odin is thousands of years older, not to mention a king and a father, I personally think Odin should have the capacity to be the better man, but Thor 2 has unfortunately shown me that I am wrong *sigh*. But then I wouldn't have been able to write this story, so I guess that's something :) ).
