Comment on The Clone Wars: Containment

  1. Well, as I said before, this story isn't going anywhere so no rush at all on getting back to it any time soon. :)

I'm surprised I found that post, too. Part of uploading this story here on AO3 was just trying to see what else the internet had for readers and writers of my preferred brand of Legends-set prequel era fanfiction. I've done a lot of searching here now and that Google search was just trying to turn over a few more stones. It was a funny coincidence to not only have my own story come right up but to realize the poster was someone who had just commented here.

I do see the Traviss books in a different light than I did when they were brand new. They've been steady fixtures in my life the whole time, though, so that shift has been gradual rather than a stark discrepancy after 15 years going by in between. Her take on the clones is still by far my favorite version of them. I think she did a solid job characterizing hypothetical cloned humans in that kind of developmental environment.

A lot of my shift has gone from liking certain things to more just appreciating them. I was never in love with Skirata, but I liked his part of the story fine. Now, there's a lot more things about him that really bother me, but I do still appreciate his character. He's a mob boss, cult leader with a huge ego and a very broken moral compass. None of that turns me off of reading about his story, but I have the same problem that a lot of readers do, which is finding it very annoying that the author seems to want us to love the guy.

I'm still fine with her very valid points about the hypocrisy of the Jedi Order and respect it as a new opinion in published EU at the time. But it got very tiring to read it over and over again in each book. The stories really could have used more balance and that's something that's glaringly lacking when I reread them now.

True Colors does tackle some great Big Questions for the first time and I'm really enjoying them on this reread. Are you liking that book overall? I've gotten to read a lot of your thoughts on Tumblr and look forward to seeing more as they come up.

One thing I will always say for the RepCom series is that it does have a lot going on and provides tons of characters and issues to discuss and argue about all these years later. I can't say the same for a series like oh, Coruscant Nights for example (nothing personal, Michael Reeves! I really liked the Medstar books).

I could go on and on, but I'll stop here for now.
