I've been hitting comment sections and reading reviews since before the season was even officially released....this is what I've found. People seem to either love it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be a strong consensus like there was with season3. The people that hate it point to the robots first and the romance second. A good portion of the people who love it even admit the romance was weird and forced and would have preferred a Brooklynn/ Darius of Sammy/Yaz pairing. Overall people still seem to prefer dinostar, but are willing to be open minded and accept kenjilynn...I see a lot of "I don't hate it, but would have preferred Brooklynn and Darius" comments. This is why I don't think they will change it....people may not like it that much, but they accept it. Plus, with only one more season on the docket and it already being approved (unofficially) there really isn't that much incentive to fix it. However if they genuinely cared what the Fandom felt then they would phase out the robots in season, and let Kenj and Brooklynn discover, that they really are more friends than lovers. Though they couldn't really pair her with Darius right away without making her look like she was just jumping from guy to guy......bout the best we could hope for is for Darius and her both to realize that there was something there, and maybe use some body language to show that there's hope for them yet....course that would be at the end, as they are finally separating for good....then the fans can come of with their own ending for the pair. Honestly, I'd just be happy to see Kenjilynn end. No romance is far better than a forced one.
Sorry UniconOfTheSun......I'm taking over your comments again..ugh! But you're a writer, I know you get it.
Apologies for this unprompted reply but holy shit you've totally hit the nail on the head!
"No romance is far better than a forced one." I've never agreed with ANYTHING more when it comes to fictional pairings. Kenjilynn was definitely pulled out their asses at the last second. Kenji in the first episode only hits on her because "he's rich" and "she's an influencer", which I took as the writers making FUN of that typical dynamic when it comes to pairings, only for them to go and make it canon??? Genuinely got whiplash from the first episode of S4 where Kenji is acting weird around Brook. I thought they had a brother/sister relationship.
Thank you, I'm glad someone else brought this up. That was one of the things I loved about this show....that they were setting up the dino nerd with the popular girl....something extremely seldom seen in real life. It was beautiful and touching, showing that your status in life doesn't matter, only your personality.
Then comes season 4 when they throw it all away and jump back into the popular girl/rich guy pairing....even the premise of their relationship was ridiculous....I mean seriously, the whole Kenji understands me because neither of us had friends before crap makes no sense. I'm pretty sure antisocial Yaz’s first friend was Sammy.....who's overly optimistic personality probably kept her pretty lonely. Scared of everything Ben probably wasn't the life of the party and Darius was way to involved with paleontologists and Dinosaurs to have really any social life.....the point being, NONE of them likely had any REAL friends before the island....therefore, the connection that Brooklynn and Kenji supposedly shared was in fact not unique to them but rather something they ALL shared. It was a rather obvious and poor attempt to explain where this romance stemmed from....just like Brooklynn saying it would have taken her much longer to realize she liked Kenji if Yaz hadn't pushed her, was a ridiculously transparent attempt to explain away how rushed the whole thing was. To me, it seems obvious that they needed Brooklynn and Kenji together for some major plot point coming in season 5, so they jammed the entire relationship into season 4..and then gave a half assed explanation on why something we all know would not have happened naturally, in fact ended up happening...
I stopped at the episode in S4 where Kenji pulls Yaz into the kitchen and asks her to stop trying to force the relationship which is the first and only time I've actually enjoyed his character. Besides Sammy to me Kenji is, like, THE most intolerable character in the show, so seeing him paired up canonically with my favourite character is pretty devastating. Reason I mention how far I've seen is because I haven't watched Yaz push Brooklynn toward Kenji yet (and don't plan to) so I had no idea the show did it twice with both characters within the same season. That's actually crazy, talk about SERIOUSLY rushed romance.
And your point about them all not really coming from a place of having friends is an excellent observation. Brooklynn and Kenji have literally nothing in common besides being of high-ish social status. And don't get me wrong, I do appreciate some opposites attract, but they're... not really opposites either? I dunno how to explain it. There's Darius and Brooklynn who, like you said, are worlds apart in terms of popularity-hierarchy; there's Kenji and Ben, whose roles seem to have swapped from the first season to the third with Ben taking on the calm/collected persona now, and Kenji being the one constantly worrying over everything; Brooklynn is talkative but stubborn, Yaz is quiet and also stubborn. It makes for a fun back-and-forth and there's definitely an unexplored dynamic there; hell, even Sammy and Kenji could be interesting given how Sammy came from a farm and Kenji is, well, rich.
But there's literally nothing even remotely interesting about Kenji and Brooklynn's dynamic, and the excuse of "well we're probably the most similar cause we don't have friends" is such a cop-out from having actual development.
Here's to hoping the plot point in season 5 is actually a break up, one that doesn't end in them getting back together. There was so much potential with Kenjilynn being a platonic sibling-esque relationship since we don't often get those in cartoons.
I don't dislike any of the characters...but I write, so I need to be inside their heads, and in doing so , you create a different bond with each one. Personally I love writing Yaz and Brooklynn the most as their characters are so dynamic and emotionally investing.
And I agree that Yaz playing matchmaker in the show kinda felt....weird. even though she's doing the same thing in my story, in the show it just seemed off....I feel like Yaz wound more be the one to point out that this didn't make any sense.
I totally get why you don't want to continue watching, though I would advise you to go ahead and do it anyway, even if it's just to over analyze it like I did. There are some moments that suggest it's possible kenjilynn won't be smooth sailing but you really need to see it yourself and make your own judgment as to what they may be foreshadowing.
I really wish they would have kept the sibling relationship between Kenji and Brooklynn and if they absolutely needed to give him a girlfriend, I wouldn't have hated to see them explore the chemistry they set up between him and Sammy in the beginning of season 3....I kinda liked watching them be goofballs together. Though I suspect they plan to do Sammy/Yaz in season 5. Which of course leaves Brooklynn as the only available female....perhaps that played a role in the decision.
That's fair, I wish I could watch a show without finding at least one character to really hate but it's a theme with me apparently lmao. In this case it's both Sammy and Kenji for similar reasons, I just think they're annoying and don't bring much to the table.
I didn't even think about it but you're right, Yaz would 100% be the one to question what's going on between the two because it makes literally no sense. Sammy would definitely do what Yaz was doing in the show, I really don't get why they're making Yaz so OOC. Actually, they're ALL OOC this season. If I wasn't so mad I probably would've overanalysed that scene.
I feel like they've been trying to push Sammy/Yaz since Season 1 which kinda makes me 'meh'. Dunno why we can't have really close female friendships anymore, I really don't see them romantically but that's probably because I ship something else. Also agree on the Kenji/Sammy thing, it would be interesting for sure, way better than what they're doing right now. Actually in the first(?) episode of S4 the entire group was split into twos, consisting of Darius/Ben, Sammy/Yaz, and Brooklynn/Kenji. Given that one of them is canon now and the other one has had not-so-subtle hints what're the odds that Darius/Ben become a thing? I wouldn't be opposed to it, it's not as bad as Kenjilynn, but I really do wonder if I'm overthinking it or if it was done on purpose.
The only good thing that I've seen so far was Ben trying to gently tell Yaz he's not interested in her romantically. That was hilarious and well-executed.
