Oof, yeah… Frederica’s path has an emotionally-devastating ending, and I don’t blame you if you need some time to process it (writing or otherwise). It’s definitely satisfying for sticking it to Hyzante, but it’s bittersweet all the same.
Like I said in my earlier post, I completely get the disgust and disappointment in Roland. Much as I haven’t gone into outright hating him myself, I don’t blame anyone that does; if he was a real person I definitely would loath him for the conclusion he reaches, and frankly I’m ASTONISHED at Frederica’s restraint in Chapter XVII Part I…
There’s definitely going to be discourse in the nascent TriStrat fandom, especially regarding Roland’s path. My big question going forward: were the writers gutsy for tackling that, or irresponsible. Given the story is very much trying to be morally grey (Serenoa can recruit literal children like Quahaug, Piccoletta and Narve into his army) and that the standard endings are all imperfect… Well, I personally don’t believe they were TRYING to suggest that “slavery is OK” (especially not when the Roselle’s suffering is shown in all its horrific glory), but it’s uncomfortable nonetheless… yeah.
OK, I’m done… I hope I haven’t offended you with this or my last post, but I’m sorry if I was insensitive in any way.
Offended? Your comments are absolutely amazing! I’ve read them—especially the one on my latest work—over and over and over. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts!
Frederica’s path is absolutely emotionally devastating, but it’s also emotionally satisfying? In a way?
I definitely don’t like that the writers trying to make anything seem positive with Roland’s ending. I guess I just don’t have faith in viewers/players to understand anything that isn’t spoonfed anymore, but god that ending is a nightmare hellworld under a shiny facade. I can’t do that ending. Ever. Honestly I’m more than a little afraid of where the discourse goes, though at least here the general consensus has settled on “fuck Hyzante, and what the fuck is wrong with you Roland.”
I’m also astonished by Frederica and Serenoa’s restraint. You can’t take those words back, Roland. Some things can’t be undone.
Thank YOU for reading and sharing your wonderful thoughts!
