Comment on Civil Hands

  1. I suppose Prompto's for-all-intents-and-purposes declaration that the Crown's security is shit would have been offensive, but...

I mean. Regis' captain of the royal guards was a traitor, and so were like 1/3 of the knights. Regis didn't notice when his son's wife-to-be got kidnapped, even though he had been expecting her. Regis instructed the Empire to sign the treaty like 100 feet away from the Crystal. Regis had no back-up plan to take the ring to safety when he faced the invaders head-on, even though he knew he was (literally) on his last leg.

I wouldn't trust the Crown's security to escort my purse.

    1. If you think too long about Kingsglaive, it is unintentionally hilarious. Like. How did Drautos find TIME to be the leading general on both sides of the war???

      1. Honestly, if you think too long about a lot of things in FFXV, weird questions like that keep popping up.

Like, as a leading example, Bahamut's plan to get rid of the Scourge was "let's enable and empower it to kill off 90% of humanity, so that we can focus our aim at the hyperconcentrated glob it becomes after it absorbes nearly anything, and we can banish it forever in one fell swoop! Victory, no more Scourge! Let us not consider that just ONE (1) man was able to successfully heal millions of people and reduce the threat of the Scourge to such an extent that it was considered more or less a minor hinderance for 2000 years. To the point that I had to actively go out of my way to retrieve that aforementioned guy (who has been twisted from saint to villain by 2000 years of torture plus imprinting upon confused awakening on fantasy!Mengele) to make him spread it again from scratch to make it a real threat again."

And at no point in the original timeline does anybody question the value of obsessively trying to fully eradicate the Scourge at *INSANELY MASSIVE* human and environmental cost, over just... handling it. Let it remain at the edge of the world as a massively weakened presence that can be easily contained on the long term with very little damage. Bahamut's plan was essentially "let's nuke any place in the world where there is even just one case of Covid, that will make Covid go away for good and the survivors will never have to deal with it ever again!" and everybody in the original timeline was like "that makes sense!"

(And then Reddit says that Behamut being the villain in the parallel timeline was "out of the blue," and they pop an artery if you point out that both timelines are canon, like Rise of the Machines and Dark Fate)

Regis (oh boy, it's a theme with the guy) knew that they used a different currency outside of insomnia, but he didn't give his son any of that money. Regis knew Noctis had to get to an island, and that the one ferry that takes people there was completely unreliable as it worked under Empire control, but even though he had a private boat he did not think to have it fixed during the months they were preparing the treaty. When Ignis wields the ring, the ghosts of the Kings point out that they can't kill him because he is needed for Noctis' journey, so they go "oh fine then, we need a price but it doesn't have to be his life, just take his eyes," meaning that a non-Royal wielder can pay a price other than his own life to wield the ring, so Nyx didn't have to die.

It's just... a lot of stuff like that. I love the game with all my heart but it would have greatly benefited from an editor.

        1. Sometimes I wonder what the game would have been like with more of these issues solved, and then I wonder if I would have felt compelled to write as much as I have for the game if it did! It can be fun to go down the what-ifs and plot hole fixing—I know I have—and sometimes it’s just fun to say meh, I’m gonna do what I want. 😈
