    Perhaps souls are made of memories. How can one experience the afterlife if you have no memories to base your thinking off of?

      I guess, that's how it seems to be in Splatoon. Like, when you respawn, it's a new body, a new brain, and the "soul" that gets downloaded to the spawn point gives the new body its memories. The you that respawns has your memories. We don't know whether it's still the same continuous consciousness, though.
