But lord Hightower, Otto's brother, sent a letter complaining about the pirates in chapter 1? Was that just a smokescreen to make him look innocent of funding the enemy? Or is Rhaenyra making up the accusation against the Hightowers?
I like how she explained away what happened in the Stepstones. Very clever :)
Whether by ill intent or not — let that remain for the reader to decide — the Hightowers had indeed been “sponsoring” the Stepstones conflict, paying their “fees” for safe passage. (The letter which Alicent brought in the 1 chapter is an example of it) And as it turned out, they had paid more, and more frequently, than any other House, placing themselves in a deeply compromising position: they were losing their own coin while simultaneously funding the Crown’s enemies.
In his arrogance, Otto had believed his counsel to the king was the wisest course. Yet now it was revealed to be the very opposite — he and his House stood at the brink of treason.
Perception is a matter of perspective. Any deed, no matter how noble or vile, can be made to appear justified or condemnable — it all depends on where one chooses to shine the light.
