Summary
The first time Matt holds Jack is a revelation, a kind of gut-punch certainty that knocks the air out of Matt’s lungs. It doesn’t feel anything like the elation Mrs. Nelson had described feeling the first time the adoption coordinator had placed Foggy in her arms. It’s another feeling all together, something more akin to the fear that took a hold of Matt the day he woke up to his unending darkness and never quite let go. It’s the rushing unknown, flooding in at once, and Matt tightens his grip on the baby in his arms just a little bit more.
Love is always the most brutal in its ambush.

Summary
If Foggy were here he’d say Matt’s just adding to Jack’s misconception that Matt is some kind of all-knowing wizard, as though Foggy doesn’t completely bank on the idea to get Jack to behave sometimes. “Do you want to tell me what you’re doing?” Matt tries again, hoping this time Jack will tell him.

Summary
Outside the air is grease-slick, heavy with last night’s rain and newspapers turned to pulp in the gutters. The quiet rustle of Jack’s jacket as he shifts against Foggy’s chest draws Matt’s attention from a passing car a few streets over, helps him rein in his focus. He listens to the tightening of Jack’s arms around Foggy’s neck, the tread of Foggy’s feet over the damp cement as they make their way towards the subway station closest to their apartment. Jack’s big now, almost too big to carry like this, his sneakered feet thumping irregularly against Foggy’s legs as they go down the stairs. But it was too early to call any of their usual sitters, and Matt couldn’t—Matt wouldn’t—let Foggy go alone.
[In the wake of a personal tragedy, Matt, Foggy, and Jack navigate grief, faith, and family.]

Summary
“Alright.” Foggy thinks, steeling himself, remembering that he is a grown man who is capable of interacting with other adults who are neither related to him nor friends spanning decades. He’s a professional. He can make small talk for a couple of hours until it’s time to cut the cake.
(God, there’d better be cake.)
[Or: The Nelson-Murdock clan attend a birthday party and Matt doesn't scale down the side of a building.]
