Summary
Bree Davenport's heart is a revolving door with no place to stay. She doesn’t know how to stop, how to brake, where the brakes even are—
Because who, with a chip in their neck and muscles built to crush and chop and burn but never break, would ever know how to stop?
She knows that Mr. Davenport says that he loves her. That her brothers love her in their own ways, but—
She knows that Adam doesn’t know how to love without it bruising, that Chase’s healing is the only super fast about him because he had to heal fast, because the bruises would linger if he didn’t because Adam doesn’t know his own strength and that's how you show love, right?
She knows that Chase doesn’t know how to love without condescending, because when you’re built to be at the top of the mountain you never know how to find your way down, because Chase cries when Spike comes out and he doesn’t know who he is when he’s not in control.
Bree knows that she herself loves like a lightning bolt. That she loves hard and fast in a way that doesn’t know how to stop, that she dated Owen long after she stopped liking him like that—if she ever did in the first place—because that’s what girls do, right? They love like it’s a marathon.

Summary
When Naerys goes to get on the ship, for a moment she looks across the Narrow Sea to the south. Somewhere down there, her mother’s bones rest on the Isle of Lys.
Maybe someone burned them in the Valyrian style. Maybe someone buried them in more Westerosi style. Naerys would not know—she has never stepped foot in her mother's homeland. Has never even left King's Landing herself.
But no matter what happened to her, Larra styled herself free. She got out.
And no matter how much Aegon raged and threaten to raze before he stormed out and likely rutted himself into one of his mistress’ beds—perhaps even Daenys sneaking out of the Maidenvault again—Naerys is on her way out of this place.
Like her mother decades hence, she is heading to a foreign land for a marriage that she would not have wished for if she could have had more of a choice, but also like her mother, Naerys is making a second bargain as well, that involves the possibility of her own freedom.
(When Naerys finds herself looking at the Stranger's arms, she makes a fateful bargain regarding her daughter's fate- the same bargain that her father and mother each, in their own ways, made with hers.)

Summary
When Quynh finally emerged from the sea, the iron finally rusting away after all of these years, she found that five centuries had passed.
And while she had dreamed, off and on, of a pale, unfamiliar man with a coward’s heart hanging above a frozen field, she had convinced herself that it had to be nothing more than a dream.
Because in those visions, Andromache had abandoned the search. Had stopped her quest.
And that couldn’t be right. Andromache would never do that to her. They were sealed in steel and sugar, in blood and in wine, in arrows and axes, the bite of each other’s blood stolen from the lips, holy in the only way that Quynh knew after so long away from her family’s faith.
They vowed their marriage to each other on over a dozen battlefields around the world, died in each other’s arms, woke in each other’s arms with blood on their mouths, tasted dragon fruit and lychee from each other’s lips, breathed each other’s first and last so many times that Quynh doesn’t remember what it’s like not to have her oxygen entwined with Andromache’s.
It’s impossible to imagine that there was a lifetime in which Andromache ever stopped searching. Not Quynh’s Andromache.

Summary
There is a woman on Emma’s front doorstep, and there are tears in her eyes.
She flings her arms around Emma’s shoulders, squeezing tighter than Emma would ever let anyone inside of her personal boundaries. “God,” the woman says, voice nearly breaking over the words, “It’s been so long. I’ve been doing everything I possibly can to get back to both of you—"
The woman turns her mouth towards Emma’s—
And Emma jerks back.
Maybe, once a long time ago, she thought that she might be interested in something like this, in women, in someone but her boyfriend—
It took years for Emma to even let in Killian. Why would she ever let some random stranger kiss her?
And so Emma pulls back quickly, sharply, and demands: “Who the hell are you?”
The woman swallows, hard. “That’s right,” she says, “You don’t remember who I am. Of course you don’t.” Her posture immediately pulls tight and back. “Regina Mills. I’m the Mayor of Storybrooke, Maine. And I need to speak to you about you and your son’s past.”
(In which Emma opens the door of her NYC apartment to find Regina Mills with a memory potion in hand, desperate to show Emma that she and her son Henry are missing someone important.)

Summary
Emily remembers waking up in the hospital after surgery, no one but JJ in there with her.
There were tears in JJ’s voice as she said, “It’s going to devastate them, to see you die.”
Emily knew that they all cared. That she had friends.
But Spencer and Derek had been dating for ages before she ever got swept up between them. They’ll grieve, probably, but—
They’ll be fine. It’s not like she was their girlfriend or anything. She hasn’t been anyone’s girlfriend in a very long time, no matter how much some part of her yearned to finally anchor herself.
She hopes that they move on. That would be better than the alternative, she has to think.
They'd only just started dating—if you can even call what they were doing dating at all. She might have wanted it to be, but she knows, in practice, that it was just friends accepting her into bed because they wanted someone that they trusted to have some fun with. They should be able to move on, right?
(When Emily fakes her own death, she has been sleeping with Derek and Spencer for about a month- but she might already be in love with them. They don't love her back, though, right? There's no way she's haunting them like they're haunting her.)

Summary
Sam doesn't know that sometimes, when she can't stand the pressure that she's under, when she is staring down at her stomach in the mirror and is unable to recognize it as her own, she drives over to Santana Lopez's house.
She knows she's riding the line any time that Santana ducks her head between Quinn's thighs and makes her see god in a way that kneeling in the pews at church never did.
But for a moment, when Santana's acrylics dig into Quinn's back, when she rides that wave, it's impossible not to chase the closest to euphoria that the ex-head of the Celibacy Club has ever felt.
If anyone found out the truth, she could claim that this is just an experiment. That this is just girls being girls, letting off some steam.
But if she's honest with herself about what she sees when she looks in the mirror, she knows that she has never felt more settled in her own skin, more at home in her own body, stretch marks and all, than when she is with Santana, giggling in her bed, nibbling at her skin, tasting the sweat from under a cheerleader's uniform.
(Her junior year, instead of cheating on Sam with Finn, Quinn ends up in a secret friends-with-benefits relationship with Santana Lopez.)

Summary
Lucy refuses to lose either of them to the veil of death. To the transition to ghosthood. Lucy has had enough loss in her life, and she refuses to have another Norrie. She refuses to lose another home. George and Lockwood are both hers, now.
So she drags them to bed and wraps her arms around both of them.
Sometimes, it’s so hard to get the motions to connect. To get three bodies to understand that they are each other’s anchors rather than poles on magnets seeking to escape each other, especially when they can all sense different things when it comes to their ghosts.
But in this moment, Lucy listens as she never has before. Listens to the beat of hearts and the pace of breaths in the chests beneath her ear, alive in the way that the creatures that they investigate are not.
George reaches out. Touches, hands calloused but tender against both of them.
And Lockwood looks at them both, gaze refusing to be torn away.
And for a moment in time, the three agents of Lockwood & Co. just breathe.
(After the case of the bone glass, the three agents of Lockwood & Co. start dragging each other into cuddles after cases, and something new blossoms.)

Summary
When humans are born, they are born with songs playing through their ears.
They say that you are hearing the song of the universe when you hear it. They say that this is the song of people’s souls. The song of a heart desperate to find its other half. They say that once upon a time, the gods reached down and rended one half of the soul from the other, man from woman, each meant to be half of a perfect whole.
(They say that Nimona was born wrong, because she could change shape, because she was neither man nor woman, because when she was a child, Nimona thought that she had heard the song on the air, but all she truly heard was the sound of the town burning, the world ending, as everyone turned on someone that they didn't understand, because it was easier to be afraid than to be curious with an open heart.)
Nimona goes a thousand years before she hears the snatch of song in her ears.
