Summary
Moving out is probably the most exciting thing that has ever happened in Dan's life so far. It's an overwhelming experience which he wasn't too keen on having in the first place. Now that it's settled that Dan will move, he only has to worry about the normal stuff: making his new apartment feel like home and finding friends. All of this is already really crazy for Dan who has not yet seen much of the world. Of all the things he didn't anticipate, falling for a voice on the phone wins the price by far. How is he supposed to concentrate on his work when his life keeps taking unexpected turns?

Dan was sitting on his beanbag chair and nodding along to Phil’s story, tossing a ball into the air as he stared at his best friend.
While Phil continued describing how pretty Amanda looked and how amazing the movie was, Dan was focused on Phil himself. He let his eyes roam over Phil’s face, catching on shiny irises and sharp cheekbones and pink lips, and thinking of how much he’d love to feel those lips against his own.
And suddenly, everything made sense to Dan.
He froze, the ball falling on his head as his chest filled with terror. Phil continued with his story, delightfully oblivious to the panic attack Dan was two seconds away from having. He was attracted to his best friend, and big time, too, but Phil now had a girlfriend, and one he’d been wanting for over two years.
Well, fuck.

Dan has to start at a new school for his last year and he isn't thrilled, especially as he is almost immediately confornted with homophobia. The only things that keeps Dan going are his friend PJ and the irritating crush he developed on a very unsuitable candidate, PJ's former best friend Phil Lester. To add to all the complications Dan has to take care to shield his brother from attacks aimed at him. Dan's life is honestly complicated so that even something as simple as a school trip turns out to be nerve-racking. -

Instead of doing that, he crashes funerals because they make him feel a little bit less alone. One day he happens to meet a grieving and sad Dan at one of those burials and the two of them connect on a deep emotional level. A long road of acceptance, growth and relearning to open up their hearts to love ensues.

“Well, that’s fair. And it’s not like I can’t relate.” He raises his glass. “To forgetting the fuckery of mortality for a little while.”
