Dream was the guardian of positivity, and Nightmare was the guardian of negativity. They were two sides of the same coin. So then why did Dream feel so...useless? Why was he even made to be the guardian of positivity when there were probably so many better options than him?
After a fight with Nightmare leading to a wounded Dream, he finds himself in his old Au, Dreamtale, and makes a wish to his mother to choose a better guardian.
Wait...why were there other skeletons here? And why did they look like...him?

After this universe's Sans broke the rules and summoned multiple of himself and his brother, and it's taking quite the toll to get everyone back to their own worlds. Some of their versions are more dangerous than others, and it seems they have established a gang and are staking out their territory under Nightmare's orders. To fight back against it, the "good" Sanses formed their own group with the purpose of serving justice and restoring balance to the universe. The two groups had been neck-and-neck for power within the city for years now.And then they find you. A cute, artsy human with big dreams and a nice smile.
And suddenly, everyone gets a bit distracted.

In the hushed atmosphere, Dream's teeth brushed against the edge of his acoustic meatus, oddly sending a shiver down his spine. "Never doubt, my dear brother," the Guardian purred, the velvety timbre of his voice resonating with a promise that held a subtle undercurrent of possessive ardor. His breath, warm and reassuring, mingled with the night air.
"I won't let anyone take you away. You're mine," Dream declared, his voice a soft caress carrying a possessive fervor that gleamed in the depths of his bright eyes. The words lingered in the air, each syllable heavy with an unspoken promise, a tapestry woven with threads of protection and threats of unspoken violence.
Dream is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure his brother's happiness. Turning back the clock and taking care of him properly is just the best way... probably.

Nightmare, one of the twin guardians of the Tree of Feelings, eats one of the dark apples he's tasked with protecting. It awakens as a consciousness inside him, not quite hostile and not quite content to pal around as a hitchhiker in Night's head, but still willing to bide its time and learn about its surroundings and its new host.
Maybe it has something to do with that pocket dimension he visits occasionally - the one with the entity that calls itself a human, and the only adult skeleton he's ever known.

Summary
He was just doing his job as Guardian. Was it too much to ask for the minimal respect they gave his twin? Nightmare didn't think so. Still, he never understood the villagers' logic for the two of them.
It didn't help that he had to experience all the negative feelings —turned into actions— against him firsthand. Nightmare was just a child when his whole life fell apart one day. One miserable day.
He wasn't needed there, and certainly not here in their home —with everyone singing Dream's praises—.
Nightmare couldn't take it anymore; he felt like he was losing himself. His Mother also knew he was losing himself.
