After Odysseus comes back, Antinous isn't killed on the spot. Which means that when Penelope saw Odysseus and confirmed it was him, she was utterly relieved, only to see him keel over with a blooming red stain from the sword in him driven in by Antinous, the very suitor who's haunted her halls for three years.
This makes Penelope plummet into a deeper depression, and this makes Telemachus fall into a spiral and despair from the fact his father came back only to be killed.
Penelope is desperate for help, for a helping hand, for someone to hold her in their lap like Odysseus would.

Athena is lucky she made it out of the games alive (well, not whatever the closest thing death was to gods). Maybe she could’ve been just a smidgen more lucky, though. Just enough so that the lightning strike had charred her brain a little to the left, and hadn’t made her memory (and mental age) collapse in on itself.

odysseus is "stuck in a room" with people who have partaken in his twenty-year journey- dead or alive, to say his final goodbyes with them. emotional turmoil ensues.
His entire life was a question. A plethora of what ifs, of what could’ve been. The words, the words that plagued in his mind rent-free, kept him up at night.
So many words he wished he could’ve said, with no one to say them to.
That would be his last hope. To spare a minute with those who were so dreadfully distant from him, whether it be because of death or time, and say everything he needed to say. Maybe then, he could find peace– peace from the war in his mind that prevailed in his palace.
What if such a hope could be granted?
meanwhile, despite their reconciliation, athena still holds onto her guilt for how odysseus turned out.
