Marina cleared her throat, looking at Pearl, who nodded. “So, we’ve been thinking about this for a while,” she said, choosing each word with care.
“You’re grown up now, sugar. You have Captain now, and you spend a lot of time together. We’re so happy for you…” Her voice trailed off as if she were searching for the right words. Aubrey’s heart began to race. It was subtle at first, just a quiet dread pooling in the back of their throat. They knew Pearl and Marina meant well, they always had. But something about this felt off.
“We were thinking,” Pearl continued, leaning toward them slightly, “that maybe it’s time for us to bring someone else into the family. We… we’re ready to have another child.

He didn't know why his first instinct was to seek comfort from the agent that nearly killed him. He didn't know why the agent sought comfort from him after doing the same. But after the first time, when Eight woke up to frantic knocking at its door and opening it to the sight of Three crying (sobbing, even. Seeing their usually deadpan face express so much genuine terror startled the octoling at first), it only felt right to let them cling onto him like the world was ending again and mumble awkward reassurances the rest of the night.
They had eventually fallen asleep together. Three was gone by the time Eight awoke and they never spoke about it again, but there was a sort of… silent agreement, like most things they tend to do. And so it became part of their routine.
Both of them were good at routine.

It was a short walk to the manhole from there, the parking area not being very far. The drumming of the water droplets hitting her umbrella soothed her a little as she approached the familiar cover of the manhole. She was just lifting the cold, wet, piece of metal when the thunder roared once more and a loud yelp sounded nearby. She dropped the cover, the metal hitting the concrete ring causing a loud metallic thud to ring out. The voice responded with another yelp of terror. And it sounded an awful lot like someone she knew…
