“Ready to go?” Scott asked from behind him, drawing Etho back into his body. “I’ve got the tongs. Cleo’s brother is bringing the salad fork.”
The clouds continued to gather. Etho stared up at them, standing still.
“We can’t go,” he said, unmoving, like a deer watching its fate creep ever closer.
Or, Etho tries to strike a balance between showing up and knowing his limits.

Want becomes need, and need becomes something he can’t ignore, no matter how much it shakes him.

“Why’d you go, Etho?” Scott asked into the thin air around them, a strange genre of disappointment seeping into his voice.
Etho couldn’t answer that if he tried.

“Uhh, h-hello, um,” Bdubs' eyes drifted downwards to the nametag pinned onto his apron. “Etho. Greetings, Etho. Wonderful shop you’ve got here. The plants are ah- nice.” He scuffed a boot on the floor and seemed embarrassed. The humor in Etho’s eyes didn’t fade.
“They appreciate it, I’m sure. Can I do anything for you?” His tone was a bit wry. The corners of his mouth curled at the corners underneath his mask.
“Ah- yes. Yes! I would love to make a purchase. For flowers. Yes, flowers.” His shoulders raised to his ears and his face flushed- almost green, but Etho was surely seeing things among the rest of the lighting in the store.or
etho runs his perfectly normal flowershop in a town that's very eccentric, to put it lightly, and bdubs takes interest in this decidedly very human shopkeeper. (especially when he drops his true name by accident) -

He could only take so much of this feeling. Every turn of his head, every bob of his chin, every small motion was punctuated with knotted strands of his pale blonde hair brushing his skin. It had gotten so bad that it now hung down to his chin, a gnarled mess that he couldn’t escape. Even his treasured bandana couldn’t keep it out of his face.
There was a time and place for his sensory issues, and a death game wasn’t it.

Joel’s eyes flicked to the phone. The simple, familiar rectangle seemed to pulse with danger, a temptation, a threat. He knew if they called it, if he ended up trapped in another ward, medicated and locked away, it would only get worse. The last time, the sterile smells, the fluorescent lights, the endless white corridors, he had felt the rot deepen inside him, a slow, gnawing decay he could no longer ignore.

Scott had crossed the crowded bar to say hello, and it had taken a moment for Etho to look up. The drink in front of him had been half-empty already, and the condensation left his hand slightly wet as he ran it through his hair and croaked out a small, “Hi. You’re Scott?” in response.
He’d looked a bit like he was having the worst day of his life. When Scott had mentioned that to Tango later, the man had laughed, a little raw.
“He’s always like that,” Tango had said. “You sort of just get used to it.”
Or, Etho has been divorced for eight months. Scott has been a widower for eight years. Trust is letting someone else see you at your most vulnerable.
