passage: Sanalen even sought him out afterwards to comfort him, though he couldn’t know that N’ton wasn’t upset at having ‘lost’ that fight. One of the candidates for Prideth’s clutch, Sanalen had been N’ton’s responsibility to transport down to Southern, and they had hit it off right away. N’ton was only two years older, despite having been Searched earlier, because of the Weyrleader’s idea to use more mature candidates.While the candidates were mostly tasked with building shelters and tending to those wounded riders who had been sent, Sanalen always seemed to find time to help N’ton scrub down Lioth in the lake, or unobtrusively watch as he mended his riding leathers. More and more often they would sit together at meal times, side by side, their hips pressed together slightly more than was necessary, their shoulders and elbows bumping when either reached for another bowl.
N’ton desperately wanted to kiss him some night in the back of the Fellis grove.

Summary
After a Long Interval, the Fifth Pass has begun. Fort Weyr experiences terrible losses and low morale under Weyrwoman Belia and Weyrleader J'vrex. When a gruesome accident claims Belia's life, Pern's other Weyrleaders task wingleader N'thal of Benden Weyr with investigating Fort Weyr, the Threadfall accident, and the Weyrleader's conduct.
He must ingratiate himself to Fort's riders and outwit Weyrleader J'vrex's suspicions, all before the next queen rises. His own Weyrleaders have designs for him, plans he has little interest in fulfilling. N'thal will do his duty to Benden and to Pern, but as far as he's concerned, courting an alluring but weak weyrwoman is not one of those duties.
