Summary
After Arthur disobeyed his father and retrieved the Mortaeus flower for Merlin's cure, Arthur's frantic pleading to save Merlin led to a misunderstanding that actually convinced Uther to take the flower to Gaius.
Now all Arthur has to do is explain to Merlin why Uther thinks they are lovers.
And while Uther is supportive of the relationship, he requires it kept secret. But in his paranoia, Uther misinterprets every innocent interaction between the two as something far more intimate, to the embarrassment of everyone involved.
And then the knights begin showing up...

Summary
Arthur and Merlin get captured and imprisoned along with knights assigned to their failed mission by Uther. With the knights as an unknown element, the pair of them have to hide their relationship and Merlin's magic. If Merlin uses his magic to save them the knights will know his secret. If Arthur or Merlin show too much emotion the knights will know their secret. Arthur desperately hopes ransom or rescue comes before he is tortured so much that he cannot convince Merlin to keep holding back. But what happens when the captors go too far?

Please remember mental illness wasn't really acknowledged in this era. The sky is covered in rain clouds. Dark and heavy they hang from the heavens, promising muddy shoes and clammy skin.
Tonight is the night.Merlin takes a deep breath and smells the life within the air. It won’t be long until this same breeze will smell of death and blood. Instead of laughter or silent anticipation, he will hear the screams of his slaughtered enemies and tend to the wounds of his men. It will smell like victory. It will be the end of a century-old war.
Magic is trickling down his veins, reminding him of the promise to his father. Tonight is the night that Camelot will fall. He clenches his fists. Tonight is the night that he will finally kill Arthur Pendragon.
Alternatively: Merlin and Arthur are Kings from enemy kingdoms. Just when they are about to kill each other, their bodies are switched and they have to pretend to be negotiating peace.
