Each day he is returned to the Sea of Gold and each day is he summoned by Messmer.

Thus, Messmer the Impaler's most noble Knight, Salza, facing the winter of his life, went out in search of his successor—an advisor; a warrior; a friend—who would be the worthy new servant of his lifelong master. His search, leading him beyond the Fog, brought to Messmer's radar a candidate of inconceivable potential.
Someone who could rival Marika herself in dominion over Messmer's heart.

You were sent to the Shadow Realm for reasons Queen Marika wouldn’t disclose. Stripped of Grace, you make a deal with Messmer the Impaler that in order to delay your death by his flames, you will find a way to lessen the burden of his ‘curse’ and help the suffering shamans. Along the way you two will find friendship in each other, and eventually have an unbreakable bond between a son of a god and a Tarnished stripped of light. But Messmer will never let it become something more, because it will mean to abandon his duty.
And to abandon his duty will mean abandoning his mother.
“Then, if Your Grace allows it, I can help you lessen the burden. In exchange, if you ever find the need to perish me by your flames…please grant me a whole day to outrun you.”
