He thought of all the times he could have held her, or all the times he never took care of her. His mind wandered to the fact that he still wanted to know so much of her, but never revealed anything of himself. He remembered that he wasn’t ready for her, not yet.
He glanced at the ground, not meeting her stare. “A ship can’t love an anchor, Inej.”
He disappeared through the threshold, leaving her alone with her half packed bags. She felt the prick of tears, not wiping them till the sound of his cane had fully gone silent. When she turned back to her knives, she felt the faintest ghost of a smile on her lips.
