Penelope saw a glint form in Anticlea’s eyes.
“There’s also our oldest son.” At her words, Laertes smiled, something Penelope could see was forced.
“You are lucky to have been blessed by the gods with a son, Laertes. If he's anything like his father, he will be a fine king,” Icarius replied, seemingly unphased at the tension between the couple. “I would very much like to acquaint myself with your family, if possible.”
“Unfortunately, for all the god’s blessings, our son has been stricken with health issues since childhood. It is unlikely he will be able to take the throne or greet you, great king,” Laertes said, and Penelope could feel him trying to place a lid back onto this topic.
Or, trying to cover up a 'curse' sent by the gods, the royal family of Ithaca attempts to keep the fact that their prince has wings behind closed doors. Fate has decided that Penelope and Odysseus will meet regardless.

Ctimene called after him, ruinously gentle, but Odysseus hardly heard her. He pushed past servants and some of the men, just barely keeping enough control of his body not to stumble as he made his way back inside, down the hall that led out to the courtyard, up the stairs, panting with air too thin to sustain him. The door of the bedroom slammed shut behind him, and Odysseus rushed to the balcony, shoving curtains out of his way to bring himself right to the edge, breathing in the night air on this side of the palace where it did not smell of smoke and blood and people who’d either stopped loving him or would very soon.
He caught a familiar name on his tongue before it could get out. She, too, wasn’t there anymore.

Diomedes tried to focus on his paperwork, tried to keep his mind engaged in the menial tasks that needed doing, but his attention kept wandering. His gaze drifted to Odysseus’s hands as they moved across the paper, writing in that careful, fluid script. The sight of those hands, strong and yet delicate, made his chest ache. He couldn’t stop watching them. He imagined those same hands running through his hair instead of writing, felt the heat of them against his scalp as Odysseus threaded his fingers through it in that familiar, tender way that had once been so comforting.

Of course, he doesn't need to marry his old friend -- she is not interested in marriage or motherhood. But he DOES need to marry someone, and there happens to be a pool of eligible bachelors eating all of his food and drinking all his wine in the palace.

Because I am sad that in the actual story, Eurylochus never makes it home to his own wife, I decided to make a universe where he does! Then I also decided to throw Polites into the mix because why not?
Following their victory in the Trojan War, it would seem that misfortune is determined to follow Odysseus and his men wherever they go, until eventually, after surviving multiple dangers, only to raise the anger of the gods and get the entire rest of the crew killed, Odysseus, Eurylochus and Polites find themselves stranded on Calypso's Island, with no way (and therefore no hope) of getting back home...up until around seven years later.
