Tachihara seems to not want to sit in uncomfortable silence though, because his voice fills the room only seconds later, apologetic and encouraging. "Don't worry, it'll be fine. Mer don't bite."
Chuuya blinks. He knows for a fact they do. They have strong, sharp teeth to hook and capture prey. To bite off the scales of fish, the hard shell of tortoises and the fatty blubber of seals. They use them to defend themselves against predators too. The most certainly bite.
Tachihara seems to realise his phrasing mistake, because his face turns into a grimace and his smile drops. "Okay. So maybe they do in the literal sense. But there's no reason to be scared. The Mer here are harmless. Mostly."
[OR : Chuuya is the new hire at a top Mer Research Facility. Dazai is an antisocial Mer who only talks to him.]

The dread soaks into Dazai like summer rain. Blinds him with midnight skies and thick drops of water falling so fast it blurs the scene around him.
He hears what might be his name, though it’s hard to be sure, as the sound of a storm thrums up against the inside of his eardrums. The pelting of a summer downpour, thick drops of hot rain falling from an inky black abyss.
A sharp crack of thunder. The taste of ozone. Waterlogged clothes that threaten to drag him to the ground.
All the way to the ground.

Or: Dazai is busy. Busy and tired. Fyodor has been arrested, but Dazai knows better than to let his guard down just yet. Something big is coming, he can feel it. the last thing Dazai needs is more stress dropped on his shoulders. Unfortunately, the universe doesn't seem to care about his problems. Mori's sudden death sets all of Dazai's carefully concocted plans on fire, forcing Dazai back into the world of the Port Mafia, and back into close proximity with a certain hot-headed gravity manipulator he's told himself time and time again he's better off forgetting. All in all, Dazai is in for a really bad time.

“Mr Tanaka said, if you tutor me, your grade will go up.” Nakahara says, almost as if he was embarrassed to mutter those words. “You’d get your fukin’ one whole mark. Thirty out of thirty.”
Dazai didn’t hear anything but ‘your grade will go up’. Sure, Dazai would rather kill himself than have to deal with this idiot any longer, but his grade would go up. That would save him the absolute misery of going home.
Nakahara takes Dazai’s silence as a question to why. “...‘Cause I failed… And I haven't done particularly well in any other assessments in chem, Mr Tanaka said you’d get a 5% increase on your assessments throughout the duration of you tutoring me. I told him it was a shit idea– I agree with you completely, I just thought I’d let you know—.”
Nakahara gets ready to turn away when Dazai grabs his hand and enthusiastically lets out a, “I’ll do it!”

Chuuya’s a swimmer, a great one at that. But he’s also a fucking idiot. He’s so close to failing most of his classes that he needs to up them if he wants to keep swimming. So, against his will, he’s been forced to get tutored by the genius-asshole, Dazai Osamu. That's it. That's all it is.

Every week, with no real pattern, but his appearance has become a constant thing, an occurrence Chuuya can't seem to escape. It's his fault, he knows, because each time he answers. There is a mundanity to it, a kind of ritual they're both used to. Chuuya will open the door. He probably shouldn't. But he will.
Dazai never has to wait long.

Drugs and alcohol this time, Dazai decided. He peeled himself from the ground with intention- to die. Despite all his failed attempts, all the times he'd opened his eyes in the hospital, each was made with the firm belief that he would not survive it. He stepped to his feet, strode silently across his apartment and chased a handful of Xanax with a bottle of whiskey expecting nothing but death.
