Arry is a churlish engine. He’s rude, gruff and unpleasant to be around. In fact, it’s a miracle that the Fat Controller even allowed him to work on the North Western Railway! Arry doesn’t seem to have learnt much from his lucky break though, and spends his days rumbling about Lancaster and Carnforth, grumbling and sometimes insulting the other engines. Surprisingly though, recently two steam engines have begun trying to crack open the churlish engine’s hard outer shell - much to Arry’s dismay!

It's the 50th anniversary of The Railway Series, and some curious (and very attentive) people come up to the engines on Sodor who were around in the 1920s to ask some questions about two certain blue engines.
This forces the long-hidden truth to come out, no matter how much everyone who was there to experience it would like to keep it buried. Nothing stays a secret on Sodor once it comes into public question, and it falls to Henry to reopen the old wounds and tell the story of 98462 and 87546.

For many years, the engineers at Crovan’s Gate have been working on a very special project, one originally started by Sir Christopher Hatt, continued by his son Sir Stephen and with Lady Julia now supervising as her older cousin entered his last years. For a long time, the Controllers of the North Western Railway had dreamed of restoring Steam as a credible means of traction on the railways of Britain and the wider world. To do so, they had to prove that it was possible to fix several ‘flaws’ that the Controllers of the Other Railway insisted made that dream an impossible one. To do that, they needed a testbed and an engine that could demonstrate the technologies they wanted to demonstrate. They all agreed that the place to look was in a prototype of an engine that had been created to match the first generations of diesels.
