Summary
Maeglin loves Idril. He is not in love with Idril. He hasn't been for years, ever since Egalmoth took him aside and patiently explained all the concepts and laws of the Eldar.
Maeglin loves Turgon, the quiet way his uncle can hold a room spellbound or easily twirl a sword in his surprisingly callused palms. He knows he is not alone in this, that the full House of Lords and indeed the entirety of the city share his love.
Maeglin cannot stay in Gondolin. He feels trapped here, like his mother was. It's beautiful, truly, the Six Gates and the fountains and the trees that Turgon wrought himself of purest silver and gold. But while it is a gilded cage, it is a cage nonetheless.

Or: Maeglin leaves Gondolin in the year 420 with his uncle's goodwill, gets captured by Sauron, escapes, and changes everything. -

It has been too peaceful in Beleriand for a while now, and the Enemy is pretty annoyed about the gnats thwarting his plans, disrupting his supply routes and killing his Balrogs – who wouldn’t be? With the cowardly Ñoldorin princes hiding behind the Sindarin rats, something needs to be done with Doriath. So, something is done with Doriath.
Underage sexual activities are mentioned, not described.
Again, this is not all nasty stuff happening (I am still me, after all), but yes, this is not an especially cheerful story for the most part.
