Summary
While Fjord had definitely grown and thrived in the Wildmothers care, had blossomed within her embrace, there were certain things that still needed some work.
His hands were calloused and dry, his nails bitten to the nubs, his palms cracked like a slab of dry stone. His skin was coated in a not so thin layer of grime, blood and sweat and dirt he hadn’t managed to scrape off yet, and he smelled less than ideal after so long on the road. His feet hurt. His growing tusks ached. His skin felt too tight. He was just an unattractive mess.
It wasn’t really a hard decision to come to. The bathhouse sounded promising, and he wouldn’t mind a bit of tender love and care.

“Part of me does still miss it,” the words are pulled from Fjord’s mouth as if it’s a great labor to get them out and he tries to avert his eyes, to mask the pained expression that accompanies it. “Not just the abilities it bestowed upon me, not just the power and knowledge - I think it’s more than that. I think I miss trying to impress it.”
Even saying as much out loud feels simultaneously like a huge weight being lifted from his chest and like an admission of guilt.

She doesn’t kiss him right away like he expects her to. Instead, Avantika slides her hand under Fjord’s shirt, laying her long fingers flat against the planes of his stomach. There’s scar tissue there, a stretch of boiled skin from the explosion that set him down this path in the first place. Either she doesn’t notice or she doesn’t care, as she presses closer and whispers in his ear, “Do you want me?”
