It was a familiar refrain that Bettel had heard many times from concerned family members (his brother, said in a teasingly concerned way), well-meaning friends (Hakka, while they were both drunk off their asses, shooting the shit in hyperspace), and, most recently, the geriatric barista at his system’s Cosmic Coffee Planet (the most embarrassing yet).
And each time, Bettel said the same thing.

Gavis Bettel cannot keep someone that belongs to the world.
So if his greed comes from desperation — of what he knows he can never truly have — then at least he can say that hey, he had those happy moments. And if Hakka is more than willing to indulge him in that fantasy, then he would be a fucking fool to refuse. Future Bettel can deal with the bitter aftertaste later.
Despite that, all he wants right now is to just revel in being all putty in Hakka’s hands, as if he really was someone special.
