"Dale watches people a lot, when he’s not working on a story. Sitting at cafés, walking in busy areas of the city, observing. He takes it all in, genuinely appreciating a lot of it, not indifferent to the things he sees and the stories he hears.
But the dissonance is strong, the barriers thick, from the language to the culture, to the ever-present asynchrony he’s always felt around people. It’s as impenetrable as the Wall used to be.
None of this surprises him. He’s spent years building his own wall, brick, after brick, after brick.
He cannot expect it to fall just because he did."
