He felt Vyncent put a hand on his shoulder, making William jump as his adrenaline spiked for a moment.
"Are you okay, Will?"
William felt sweat drip down his neck. "Yeah, yeah- yeah- I'm all good. I'm all good." He said quickly, as the same anxious feeling held him in a vice grip.
"Alright, you just seem a bit jumpy." Vyncent said, concern in his eyes.
"Really?" William said, trying to brush off his friend's concern. "Me? Jumpy? I'm not jumpy. I'm fine. I'm totally fine. I'm chill, actually. Very chill."
William jumped again when he saw something moving from an alley, and turned his head to look at it. He only saw it for a moment before it slithered into the darkness.

The wisp disappeared. And another one took its place a few feet away. This one was closer but still far enough away that William couldn’t distinguish anything about it except the blue aura of light that surrounded it and the flames that flickered and rose into the air.
It disappeared quicker this time, too quick for William to study it and try and decide what it wanted. But just as soon as it was gone, another appeared in the same pattern as the last, but instead of getting closer to William, it was getting closer to the door.
They were trying to lead him somewhere.

William slowly brought a trembling cigarette to his lips and held it there for a few seconds without doing anything. Then, he breathed in and took a long drag, held it in his lungs for a few seconds as the burning smoke seemed to coil and writhe inside his chest.
It stung. Smoke tore down his throat, ripping into the delicate lining of his trachea and burning in his lungs. It was almost as if William had swallowed acid, a deep stinging sensation starting from the center of his chest, and growing throughout his neck and mouth as the taste spread across his tongue. Black wisps puffed out his nose when he held his breath for too long, long enough that the ache was too hard to ignore and he was forced to slowly exhale, puffing out curls of smoke into the air and watching them float into the sky.

There, on a small white plate in front of him, is a slice of cake. It’s lying on its side, showing light layers of pale frosting contained inside of it. The color of it is a light brown, similar to William’s own eyes. He can’t seem to look away from the desert; there’s just something about it that keeps his gaze glued upon it.
“I remember that you told me that it was your birthday today,” Vyncent stands next to William and places a hand on his shoulder. “I think it was back when, like… When we were in school? You were…”
Vyncent continues to air out his thoughts but William can’t seem to hear the rest of it. All that he hears is that Vyncent remembered it was his birthday today. He remembered it.

Tall blades of grass rippled in an imaginary wind, blowing and swaying gently as if they were alive, like small tendrils reaching up towards a permanently writhing gray sky. What might have been seen as dark, angry clouds stretched high above the occasional pass of a dilapidated tree in the long stretch of desolate meadows. The clouds swirled and twisted, constantly moving, flickering, changing into different shades of black and white, flickering between faces and personalities.
And the grass below churned like a roaring ocean, kicking up bugs and dust and dirt. It sprayed fragments of… things… spirits… people? Mere remnants of something that used to exist but now can barely manage a corporeal form.

So really, William had worse problems to deal with. His headache wasn’t the biggest concern. But god, did his head hurt.
One moment, William swore that he had barely managed to check the three of them into a motel nearby with what money he had. He had made some sort of agreement with Dakota and Vyncent (that William was really struggling to remember) while they were trying to settle in the room and figure out where to go from there.
And then now, William was here… somehow (he honestly didn’t remember the walk here, that probably wasn’t very good).
