Carla wonders when she will meet the One. It’s not as if she hasn’t had plenty of chance, but as her high school friends have grown older — luckily, they met their soulmates right after graduation, aging the way they should because of it — she’s stayed looking twenty-five for the better part of six years.
It’s frustrating, honestly. She still gets carded at the club, and every time, she has to explain that she hasn’t found the one she’s meant to grow old with — not yet — however much she wishes she had. At Sunday mass, people check the lines on her hands to see if the hair product from her job at the salon in Queens has taken its toll. It hasn’t.
Carla doesn’t really look in the mirror anymore.
(Or, the one where their soulmate is the only one they're ever meant to grow old with. The one where Carla and Daniela both stay twenty-five until they meet The One.)
