Summary
“I can’t,” is all she has to whisper for the conversation to end. To be fair, it had barely begun.
Gill nods quickly, removing his hands from hers, because he’s sweet and loving and selfless and everything she could ever ask for. Everything she could never be. He risks everything just to spend a few moments with her, and Jay just isn’t brave enough to do the same. She’s never been particularly special.
“Sorry, I— that was selfish, I’m, I’m sorry,” He sputters out in a panic, with the fins on his face drawn back and stretched tight.
“Hey, hey, no,” She puts her hand on his cheek, rubbing her thumb against his wet skin gently.
Or:
Gillion is a merperson, and Jay is evidently not. There's no easy way for them to be together, except for one, but Jay isn't sure if she can take that leap.

Summary
“Yuck,” Jay leaned down to wipe her hand off on the grass, trying to get as much of the bug guts and blood off her palm, “that’s so gross.”
“What happened?” Chip stopped walking and approached Jay with a tired but curious look. He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand and squinted.
“Some massive bug bit me,” Jay just shook her head and sighed.

Summary
“Come on, Jay,” she whispered harshly to herself. A wooden bow was clutched in her left hand, the string pulled back with her right. Her fingers stung as the string dug into them, slowly beginning to form blisters the longer she practiced.
She tried to exhale smoothly, but the breath came out shaky as her whole body trembled from being overworked. Her arm jerked at the last minute, sending the arrow slightly to the left of its path to the bullseye.
Jay resisted the urge to groan in frustration as she could still feel eyes staring into the back of her skull. No matter where she was, she could always feel his eyes following her every move.

Summary
The world fell apart after the virus and what people called the first night. People all over the world became infected as they died, but they didn’t stay dead for long. They came back every time, no matter how they passed. Those that weren’t infected fought for their lives, as those who had lost theirs attacked.

Summary
It was understandable, they had been walking for at least an hour or so with very few breaks. Jay already knew that her body would be killing her tomorrow.
So she chalked up the pain in her shoulders to being hunched over for so long, or the chill of the rain affecting her a little more than normal due to being out in it for so long.
But the ache didn’t go away.
If anything it seemed to get worse.
