One night, however, he sees a strange creature: one that lights up all on its own, providing some meager comfort to what John fears most.

Summary
Once undressed, John helps him slip the piece of new clothing over the top of his head. It floats down the length of his body, fluttering coolly against his skin. Arthur turns towards the mirror above the sink, smoothing his hand along one side of the fabric, its silken texture an invitation he could not stop admiring.
“This isn’t a dress, John,” Arthur says as it dawns on him. “It’s a nightgown.”

John remembered too well what it meant to be inside Arthur’s skull. To be housed. Cradled, even, in the confines of it. And if it could no longer hold him—if Arthur was gone, or shattered, or unreachable—then this would have to do: a shape like a mind, a structure like a thought. Not quite a home, but something adjacent. Scaffolding to hold himself together, made of the only material he had left.
