Some of his vital functions appeared to have been terminated. That and other strange...anomalies had left X6-88 disoriented enough that he was being forced to build a new operating baseline. Somehow these changes had preserved his functionality despite sustaining what should have been a critical degree of damage.
Perhaps not a malfunction, then, but rather an upgrade--the better to serve their stated goal of achieving revenge against the Brotherhood of Steel. X6-88 thought he could work with that.

Until he hears a broadcast on his HAM radio and accidentally meets Kasumi. Kasumi claims she’s a synth too, and that she’s recently found out about a secret colony for people like them to live; on a mysterious island called Far Harbor. Shaun feels like it’s a call to action. Because whoever they are, they’re claiming to have the one thing he wants most: answers.
