Summary
Another root sprouting from the dirt almost sent Dante crashing face first on the ground. Vergil teleported right before his crumbling silhouette and the red twin landed on his older brother's back.
“Hold on to me.” Vergil said as his hands shifted to grab the back of the hunter’s knees.
“What? No, I can walk, I just…”
“You need to rest. So sleep and heal. I’ll walk.” He cut the red twin off as he pushed on his legs and stood up, carrying his brother on his back.
“It’s not fair.” He protested softly but his arms shifted to wrap around his neck, his head resting on his shoulder.
“Life isn’t fair, Dante.” Vergil hummed.
“One day I’ll give you a piggyback ride too, so we’ll be even.” The hunter huffed groggily and the blue twin could feel him relax.
“Over my dead body.” Vergil scoffed, rolling his eyes at his nonsense.

After the events of DMC5 Dante and Vergil are stuck in the Underworld.
Dante is sick and needs to go back to the Human World, but Vergil can't follow him there. No matter how much he wants to.
The harsh truth is that Dante is not the only one who is sick, but the blue half-devil can't let his little brother know that. -

“Children, Dante.”
“We’re back!” Nero’s voice echoed and Julio smiled, happy that everyone was home now. He could hear the voices of the three hunters talking in the entrance, and the boy followed his brothers to greet them.
He felt the usual uncomfortable moment of awkwardness when he saw Vergil and Dante.“H-Hello.” He mumbled, feeling shy but still wanting to be polite.
Carlo squealed in delight and clumsily walked up to the trio, promptly extending his arms towards Vergil. “ ‘gil! ‘gil ! Up!”
The blue half-devil bent and picked his baby brother up while Kyle jumped onto Nero.The chestnut haired boy was cackling madly as he hung upside down from their foster father’s shoulders, and the oldest kid felt a small pang of envy.
These two made it look so easy… and he was always left on the sideline.
But as soon as the thought formed, a deep voice boomed and everything faded under a wave of delight. It was Dante. -

One of Nero's children had been bullied by some boys for quite some time. Luckily, something happened that last week, and they didn't show up at school. Finally, some peace and quiet, and the visit from Grandpa Vergil and Uncle Dante only made things better.

"What the hell is Nero doing?!" was all Dante could say, and Vergil gave him a wary, serious look, at least in this way expressing his concern.

"And now what ? Are you going to let me leave ?” Vergil asked, his tone icy.
“What? You can’t leave !” Dante exclaimed in shock.
“I can and I will. So? What are you going to do? Take my choice away again ? Then what ? Hold me prisoner in that shop of yours ? Should I call you “Master”, like Mundus ? Will you chain me to another wall, so that I can’t run away as well? ” Vergil scoffed, poison dripping from his words.
“You know what? Yeah, maybe I will. At least I’ll be sure that you won’t be going on another rampage.” Dante openly mocked him. “ You got any other kid to mangle?”
“Then let’s settle this once and for all.” The blue twin hissed.
“Fine. One last duel, but I have a condition.” Dante smirked. “If you win, I won’t interfere with your life ever again. Whatever you do, you’ll have my blessing.”
“And if I lose ?” The blue twin asked, his razor sharp focus on Dante.
“I’ll take the Yamato and you’ll become my slave. I’ll be free to do whatever I wish to you, and you won’t ever be free again.” The hunter hoped that the fear of captivity would be enough to snap him out of his rage.
“Fine.” Vergil whispered and Dante felt his blood turn cold. Shit.

Summary
After returning from the Underworld to Red Grave City with his twin brother, Dante, and successfully severing the Qliphoth roots that had tampered with the human world above, Vergil finds himself to be struggling to get accustomed to human life again. As a half-demon, half-man, he had neglected his humanity in his pursuit for power. After all, it was the only way he could survive in the demon world. But now, as he was living amongst humans again as he once did many years ago, he had thought his biggest struggle would be to live with his insufferable little brother. Little did he know it would be the girl who would soon teach him what it truly meant to be human.
Perhaps there truly is a calm before the storm.

A sequel to "The World Tree".
Wandering the Underworld, Dante and Vergil stumble upon a familiar face. However, Hell has twisted this lost soul into something unrecognizable. It’s a race against the clock, as a servant of a long-dead king vies for the blood of Sparda and the brothers try to save the youngest of their family. Because, despite Nero being tucked away safely in the human realm, no one is safe. The spool has begun to unravel, a monster stirring, strangling twin souls with lost magic.
And while their trials may be different: Vergil, now forced to navigate the human world after over twenty years of being cast from it, and Dante learning how to survive in the Underworld after staying to save his newly discovered daughter; both the brothers must learn one important lesson…What it means to be a father.

“I ordered pizza.” Trish said, showing Dante the white box. “Everything on it, except olives. Your favorite.”
There was a hint of surprise and the ghost of a sad smile on the red twin's lips.
“Ha, thanks but… I’m not really hungry right now.” The hunter muttered as he let his eyes close again and shifted slightly, his head coming back to bury itself in his pillow.
“Please, you need to eat something. Anything. Just tell me what you’d like and I’ll go get it for you. Please, Dante.” The demoness begged him, unused to feel so helpless.
“I’m good, thanks. “ Dante murmured and he drifted back to his dreams, running away from real-life.
Trish sat in silence on the bedside, watching with growing desperation as the red twin went back to sleep.
What could you do, when you were trying to save someone that didn’t want to be saved ?

One month after the events of Home, Dante isn't doing well. Time's running out for the half-devil and Nero's on a desperate journey to try to save his family before he loses everything.

When Nero and Kyrie finally get a chance for their first romantic weekend, they face an unexpected challenge: finding someone to watch over Carlo, Julio and Kyle. With their usual options exhausted—Dante's pizza-and-sundae diet won't cut it, and Lady and Trish are away on a job—they're left with an unlikely pair of babysitters: Nico, their chain-smoking weapons specialist, and somehow Vergil, Nero's recently returned and estranged father who's still figuring out everyday things.
Nero's trying to remain optimistic about the whole thing, really. Sure, Nico's idea of "child-proofing" involves unconventional methods, and according to Dante, Vergil's current relationship with the microwave could best be described as an "armed standoff," but seriously—what's the worst that could happen when they were away?
...Maybe Nero should write down a number in bigger letters on that emergency contact list. Just in case.
Possibly in red ink.
Actually, maybe he should just write it on every wall.
A sequel to " Switching Places" but can be read independently, offering a bit of a character study of Vergil from the observations of different characters.
