Healing from the carnage of yet another war and its fallout, the Four Nations attempt to pick up the pieces and move forward. Yet the memory of humanity's--and the Avatar's--failings still stings. Some now begin to question her role in the war, or even her role at all. Her successor must learn to navigate a world who wants to control him...or destroy him entirely.
Set 900 years in the past, this story follows the life of an Avatar facing the scars of war, as well as his place in its painful history. His journey will take him from the cliffs of the Western Air Temple to the tundras of the North Pole. To the mountains of the Earth Kingdom and possibly, he hopes, back home. But when he finds himself in the lair of a dark spirit--a faceless spirit, with a deal to offer--both history and the future may hinge on his choice.
Originally conceived and written shortly after Season 1 of The Last Airbender as a standalone novel about the Avatar who battled Koh. With time, now adapted as the first of 3 novels touching on the long feud between them both.

Zuko looked round the room wildly. A trash can stood near his velvet-draped door. He bolted for it and heaved, the contents of his stomach reminding him that he once again had not eaten dinner last night. Stringy blue half-digested liquor pooled at the bottom of the bin.
He collapsed back to lying on the ground. It had been three months since Fire Lord Zuko invaded his own city of Ni-Ban. About five months since a terrorist attack from Ni-Ban-based Fire Nation First left almost a thousand Harbor City citizens dead. Five or six years since Zuko realized his bending had dried up, giving him yet something else to keep hidden every day. Eight years since Zuko killed his younger sister Kiyi. Eleven years since Azula disappeared.
He tried to think back. When had it gotten this bad? Had he had a better grasp on things, before Kiyi died? On the day Kiyi drank the tea... what had Zuko done that morning? Had he slept in a bed the night before? Had he appreciated the smell of honeysuckle as he passed through the royal courtyard? Had he signed laws and given policy orders with faith rather than sick fear?
