"You're pushing me away just like you always did!" Raph accused, earning him a scoff in contempt. But he went on anyway. "Why!? Why is it so hard for you to admit you're hurting too!? What are you so afraid of!?"
Leo opened his mouth as if to answer. But changing his mind he turned around to continue walking down the street. Raph followed, matching his slowed pace while Leo didn't have the energy to deal with another yelling match right now so listened instead.
"I want things to go back to the way they were before with us."
No response, Leo kept on walking.
"Or if they can't go back that way there's nothing saying we can't work on this, together."
For reasons he didn't quite understand Leo walked straight past his apartment building, continuing on down the wet New York street.
"I don't want to leave things they way they are between us. It's been too long, don't you think?"

Leo continued staring at the ceiling. “Nothing’s wrong per se, and I am excited about tomorrow. I just got caught up reflecting today, I guess.”
“On?” Donnie asked. “What’s going through that head of yours?”
The answer was going to bring down the mood. “I don’t think you realize just how much you all saved me, after the invasion. Dee, growing up, I never thought I’d live to see our eighteenth birthday. Now we’re turning twenty-eight tomorrow, and I’m still alive.”

“Hey, no, look at me,” Donnie snapped — vocally and literally, fingers inches from Leo’s face. “I need you to answer me something, but it’s a simple yes or no. Can I hold you?”
Leo nodded, ashamed. He felt Donnie’s arms wrap around him and haul him into his lap. He tucked his head into his twin’s neck.
“I know you, sometimes better than I know myself,” Donnie said, voice low as he rocked them slightly. “You only break down like this when you start spiraling. Whatever it was, it’s wrong.”
“Can’t do anything right,” Leo whispered, hoarse from crying his heart out. “Fucked up macaroni, just like everything else. You’ll realize it soon, when you’re not scared of losing me anymore. You’ll remember that I’m incompetent, and this just proves it.”

Summary
By eight thirty the lair was running on generator power and Donnie’s ears were ringing so loud he couldn’t even hear the baritone of the motor thrumming out in the open sewers. Note vibrating on the handle because no twin had returned home to rip it off with a roll of his brown eyes before depositing the original propane tank nearby. Donnie couldn’t hear Mikey’s voice as he asked about Leo, he couldn’t feel Raph’s hand as they brought him into the lair to warm up his frozen fingers.
Someone else moved Donnie’s mouth and made his vocal cords vibrate into the open air of their home. Someone else stood in the doorway of their father’s room begging their dad to get out of bed because Leo was missing. Someone else felt the world caving in because all the things that were supposed to be unimaginable were happening right now.
As if panic could knock back a respiratory infection Raph and Mikey hooked the TV up with Donnie’s numb help. The weather report was worse than they last knew. That blizzard that was originally projected to hit tomorrow by one in the afternoon would be here at their doorstep much earlier.

"Leo didn't know what to do or how to help. But in the haze of it, he caught a glimpse of Casey's eyes, wide and terrified and smothered with tears. That's when he noticed it. Casey's eyes were bloodshot red. To a point where it was scary. And all of a sudden, his behavior made a lot of sense. The panic, the over sharing, the honesty, the carelessness, all of it.
Oh.
Oh boy.
Leo wasn't just talking to a sleep deprived Casey who was info dumping. He was talking to a Casey who was high out of his damn mind right now. He was talking to a Casey who was having a panic attack all the while being stoned out of his soul.
Oh.
That actually made a lot more sense. A lot.
That explained why he was awake. Why he was swaying from side to side whenever he stood. Why his legs never seemed to work properly. Why he and Raph came home late. Why they snuck back home without anyone noticing. Why he was oversharing. Why Casey was freaking out.
But that realization didn't help the situation in front of him."
Or: Leo finds Casey awake in the middle of the night. Somehow, that escalates to him trying to guide the guy through a panic attack.

Part of the reason why outer space had seemed so, well, spacious was how easy it was to pass through it all. Constant steps weren’t needed. All he had to do was give a good jump and there he was, soaring through the cosmos. It was almost like he was flying. In another world, it would’ve been fun to explore a foreign galaxy.
Earth wasn’t like that. Earth was knees knocking together as they struggled to keep him up. It was crutches and physical therapy and chronic pain that’d follow him until he was old and gray. The expectations settled on his chest like stones, stacking on top of every other problem in perfectly topped piles.
He was so heavy now, he thought.
“Do you want a hand?” April asked quietly, eyes wide. Leo’s stomach twisted. She looked so scared. He hated seeing his strong sister so down.
or, Leo spent longer on the other side of that portal than his family thinks. 5 times Leo brushed past a trauma response he gained in the Prison Dimension + 1 time he gets help with pre-invasion issues.

Mikey will never forget those horrible minutes after the portal closed, after Leo’s comms went dead, when he had wondered if he would ever hear his brother’s voice again. When he wondered what, exactly, his last words to Leo had been—they almost certainly weren’t I love you or please don’t leave so they didn’t count.
To make up for it, he wanted to tell Leo everything every chance he got. He wanted to make him laugh all the time. He wanted to crowd into the little twin-size infirmary bed to watch movies or do art projects that got glitter everywhere. He wanted to sneak out for smoothies even though it would get them in big trouble, because that was literally why he helped save the world in the first place.

Looking back, Raph can count all the red flags he missed and hates himself a little more for each one. Leo sometimes causes problems for fun, and he likes to see what trouble he can get away with or get himself out of, and he is a downright menace to society when he’s bored—but he’s good. He’s sweet, and charming, and wants to help.
Leo wouldn’t have raised an issue with the other group of mutants, potentially cutting ties with useful allies, unless he had a decent reason to.

“It’s a nickname. Short for Donatello.”
“Heh.” He quirks a smile. “Kinda a coinkydink ‘cause-”
“Hamato Donatello.” Leo’s head shoots up and the turtle looks back. “My brothers are Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo. They have nicknames too. Mikey, Raph…” He tilts his head, urging, “Leo.”
Leo stares, looking for any sign of deception. The turtle keeps talking, almost as if he’s trying to get the words out before his brain can catch up. “We’re a team. We fight crime and save people. I have a father. We call him Splinter. He’s a rat. Used to be a human. Adopted me and my brothers, taught us ninjitsu.”
Leo’s paralyzed. He waits for the snickers, or for the punchline.
The turtle does not shirk away, eyes bright with the maniac look that Donnie gets when he proves a theory correct and is dying for a single person to acknowledge that he’s the smartest being on planet earth.
“So. Leo.” It’s conversational, calm, eager. “What’s your family like?”
