They intended it as torture. When they first chained him, when the first drops of the snake’s venom burned against his forehead, he screamed and thrashed and cried—but only for their benefit, Odin and Thor, Frigga and Sif, all the rest, so they could never claim they did not know.
He occasionally thought of how some of the Aesir claimed that they only chained him there so as to prevent further “mischief” of the sort that left gods dead and light darkened. It was a lie crueler than ever he had told. Of course it was meant to hurt him. They intended it as torture, and after a century had passed he began to struggle in earnest, no longer the calculated twisting and tugging of his limbs that he had thought would allow him eventually to escape but simply a desperate, involuntary motion; a painful jolting twitch as each drop hit.

Loki had every intention of wreaking havoc upon Midgard the moment his suicide attempt had failed. Really. He'd planned on setting cities ablaze, smashing buildings, pillaging, all of that good stuff.
Too bad he hadn't planned on the place being so FUN.
Destroying City Hall? Maybe if he can squeeze it in between ikebana and his Thai cooking classes. Oh, he tries for the whole supervillain thing, but is it really his fault that he really likes going to yoga and hair products that don't require massive amounts of oils that leave him feeling greasy? Is it really his fault that manicures are so damn RELAXING and that those little Asian ladies in the salon are so charmingly adorable? Besides, his therapist says that all the rage is unhealthy.
TL;DR Loki gets a therapist and finds Earth hobbies that he enjoys in between bothering his brother and his friends.
SUPER BONUS: The Avengers get a petition pleading from the nail salon and his therapist and various instructors for them to please not kill him because he's a considerate customer and is actually a very nice young man.

For the damage Thor has done during his little romp to Jotunheim after his interrupted coronation, Laufey demands payment - payment in the form of Odin's youngest son as his bride.
Odin is then in the situation where if he refuses they are at war, but to accept would send Loki into bed with his biological father. For whatever reason, he figures marrying Loki off is the only way to go.
Of course, Loki's real identity is revealed the first time Laufey touches him (in their bridal chamber?) but by then they are already married (and their marriage was a contract of peace so while Laufey wants to go kill all of Asgard his hands are bound).
