Mac turns on the club's dancefloor as his gaze falls to the drunkenly writhing mess of limbs and green army jacket on the ground at his feet. He laughs at his friend Charlie, pointing for emphasis and in no rush to help - One can only assume his enjoyment in the suffering of others outweighs the opportunity to impress.
"Goddamnit!"
Mac stops laughing immediately, his head snapping towards the voice beside him like a Pavlovian dog. Dennis... He sees the frustration radiating from him and it feels like disappointment. This is sobering, as though he'd suddenly expelled all of the intoxication in his blood out of his pores.

He hadn't even been that intent on doing his regular job at Paddy's, not when Dennis was here but pretending they weren't even friends. “No way we're doing that, Frank.”
Frank smiled cruelly. “There’s five-hundred dollars in it for you if you do.”

Dennis kisses his teeth, sparing the other churchgoers a glance before focusing his attention on Mac. Mac always loves to shove religion into everyone’s faces but Dennis hates it the most when it came to matters of homosexuality. Because Mac is, undoubtedly, gay, but not only does he refuse to admit it, he often takes on this self-righteous and bigoted attitude towards the whole thing. This tends to involve him projecting his own insecurities and homosexual tendencies onto Dennis.
But Dennis isn’t the one getting hard from listening to a pastor talk about gay sex. Mac is.

Mac watches as his uncharacteristically still best friend was moved from bleeding out on the floor to bleeding out on a stretcher to be whisked away and moved into the ambulance to be taken to the hospital three blocks away from Paddy’s.
What if Charlie didn’t make it that long?
He doesn’t let himself dwell on that too long before he starts cutting through all of the officers and forensics teams and whoever and whatever else was there, too focused on catching back up to Charlie. A crowd has gathered outside of Paddy’s by this point, and Mac pushes and shoves his way through them, too, walking as fast as he can.
They’re loading Charlie’s stretcher into the back of the ambulance when Mac finally catches up with them.
