Every time Jesper thought he had seen a bit of something more from Kaz, a genuine smile that lit up his eyes and made him look real, those jaws would snap shut and Kaz would be unreachable again. It was like Brekker was one of those damned hermit crabs that wandered up and down the docks, determined to tuck themselves in their hard shells at the first sign of someone getting close. Jesper didn’t want to lose the bit of Kaz they had coaxed out so far, not when it felt like such a gift to have it. He had wanted to stop pestering and let Kaz come to them instead, and because of that he may have signed the poor guy’s death warrant."

It was comfortable, always buzzing with students, and smells of baked goods wafting through the air. Kaz might even admit that perhaps this ordinary day-to-day was a nice aftermath of his bumpy childhood. The familiarity of his crows, his routine, brought him comfort.
Something shifts in the air when a new face appears in his life. He doesn't believe in fate. He doesn't. He believes in his survival and his crows. His solitude had never been an inconvenience for him. But something in her, how she fits in easily, her quick wit that could rival his or easy laugh, just might him reconsider his beliefs.
