Summary
Even as he swung a leg up to straddle his brother, Vash knew he would blame the alcohol in the morning. Not that the two of them would talk about it of course—they never talked about it. He knew it was wrong to do this, to press his full body against his brother’s, lips firmly locked. But, it wasn’t like it really counted so long as they were drunk, right?
When he was in bed that night, with the sound Knives’s soft breathing from the other side of their dorm, Vash would replay this moment in his mind.

“My business is the pursuit of peace and love,” Vash says. Nicholas lets out a loud bray of laughter. “What?!"
Nicholas snickers, not even bothering to attempt politeness any longer. “Love and peace is a funny pursuit when you share a name with a man that’s shot so many bullets he’s earned sixty thousand Union dollars on his head."
Vash cocks his head at Nicholas, and his eyes wander down to the gun at Nicholas’ hip before flicking back upwards. “Ah, but Father,” he says piously, “I’m sure you know first-hand how the path of peace requires much of us all.”
Nicholas narrows his eyes and wishes for a cigar. Vash stares back with wide, innocent eyes. It’s infuriating; it’s delicious; it makes Nicholas want to prod at him until he finds what’s hidden underneath. Anybody could be fooled by that face, by that careful expression, by that deliberate and rehearsed body language, but Nicholas wasn’t anybody, and he wasn’t fooled.

Here’s the thing: Vash Saverem is broke. Not just poor — oh, no. He’s out-on-the-street broke. He’s three eviction notices down and the last one was printed on pink paper. Fired from two jobs within a week flavor of broke. He hasn’t eaten since yesterday morning when he inhaled a granola bar and had to drink directly from the tap to keep from choking.
So, when he got said pink-papered eviction notice, Vash knew he couldn’t be picky about his employment anymore. When he initially went job searching, all his hope had spiraled down the drain with every page he sifted through. References, high school diploma, good standing, experience… Every single one listed something that Vash simply didn’t have. By the time he got to the fifteenth page, all the listings had been for such specific types of people that it was no wonder they weren’t getting snapped up immediately. Contractors and freelancers and people with connections that Vash could never even hope to have. All except for one:

Finals came and went in a flurry, and Vash decided that he probably liked his roommate.
Like liked.
Well, it was fine to have a wet dream, right? Everyone gets pent up, and sometimes your brain chooses random people!
Except it happened. Every. Week. And he couldn’t stop thinking about it during the day if he tried, especially when they had their weekly movie nights together. Of course his bedsheets smelled exactly as he envisioned them in his dreams.
Thank god he had the rest of break to sort those feelings out, because if he had to be around that chiseled jaw, that this much taller than him man, who always checked in on him and secretly scanned his face for eye bags or stress – he wouldn’t be able to think straight.

When Vash woke, it was with someone else cradled in his arms. That wasn't unheard of. It happened, sometimes, with the drinking.
So he supposed this was another of those mornings – that he would extract himself from bed as carefully as possible so as not to wake his partner, collect his things, leave them a glass of water and a note, and make his way back to his own room to go through his usual workout. Maybe find himself some breakfast before he met up with Wolfwood. Normal stuff.
Except when he opened his eyes to take in his surroundings and plot his escape, he was hit by one terrible, unconscionable revelation.
The person in his arms was Meryl.

“Milly,” and that's Meryl, from the driver's seat, Vash catches a glimpse of her in the rearview and tries to make sense of the expression he sees on her face. It's? Worried? He can't figure out what she's worried about, “Vash just woke up, maybe we should talk about something else?”
Why would they talk about something else? Vash's brain feels like it's playing catch up, but Milly doesn't seem to be concerned. “Aw, Meryl, but we want to know!” there's a minute where he and Meryl's eyes meet across the rearview mirror and the look in her eye is all the warning he gets. “Mister Vash, when's your birthday?”

It never really felt relevant to him, considering the fact he was definitely, certainly a Beta. It was all half-baked and useless information about abstinence and the importance of safe sex between Alphas and Omegas anyways. Though...
