Maedhros had given up on escaping from Angband himself. They never left him lightly guarded when he was hale enough to run. But that didn't keep him from plotting to help someone else.
Lirulin didn't know what to think when the red-headed thrall freed her and her family from their chains. But it gave them the chance to implement their laboriously planned escape attempt, so they didn't question their luck.
Later, after Lirulin was free, she drew a map of Angband for Fingon. Even though she thought he was crazy. To her joy, she soon learned of Fingon’s success, and then bore witness to his strong friendship with Maedhros.
This story can stand on its own, you do not need to have read any of the other stories in this series(es). None of the AU elements of my series as a whole preclude this story from working more or less within the general framework of canon.

Maedhros regarded the dog at his feet. He had thoroughly finished with the food, and now looked up expectantly; he looked a little as if he wanted to go to sleep.
How long would it take for this beast, too, to forget how to run? To learn safety and forget danger, and fall before his time?
“This is not your place,” said Maedhros. “Go now, with thanks for your service — I will not forget it. But for me to repay you by turning you lapdog would do you no good. Go run with your fellows, and do not forget your strength!”
When Maedhros wakes after his rescue from Angband, a dog he does not remember is patiently waiting at his side.

Fingon smiled. “If I confessed to how often I thought about bedding you, you would accuse me of intemperance.”
This was true, thought Fingon disliked being facetious. He shifted foot to foot. If he thought too long about last night, and bringing Maedhros to heel by force, it brought on a queasy, intoxicating hunger.
(Maedhros is healed in Mithrim, and Fingon discovers they share some new inclinations)
