Another bump in the carriage and Peter finds himself holding onto the edge of the wall. He locks eyes with Nathaniel and they both raise their eyebrows.
“Been a rainy season,” Nathaniel finally comments. “Roads haven’t been properly tended.”
Peter has little interest in those affairs, he just thinks himself lucky for being so used to unstable travel.
“Sounds like there will be plenty of work in the winter then,” Peter says, folding his arms now that the carriage is more stable.
He’s not one for small talk, knowing Nathaniel isn’t either, and they both look out opposite windows until Nathaniel finally speaks again.
“Anyone tell you about the ball?”
Peter raises an eyebrow.
“Pardon?”

In his mind, he identified them with their characteristics, but nothing distinct enough to dwell on when they were inevitably gone. The young man, the tired woman, the fifth crew member. Their positions, and their relative closeness to Peter Lukas himself were, ultimately, expendable.
