Summary
Link may be training as a swordsmith, but he thinks he wants to make a brooch of the dragon in the sky.
It is unlike anything he has ever seen. Zelda – shrouded in tree cover, hiding from Minister Potho’s searching gaze – tells him about dragons from myth. They are very big, scary beyond belief, and breathe red-hot flames onto those who wrong them. He thinks the dragon in the sky only fulfils one of those requirements.
It certainly is large, and if it curled up inside Hyrule Field it would probably spill over the edges. The dragon skirts through the air on a specific path, so he only tends to see it at nighttime, when it appears all the more magical. Like a secret for him and him alone. In the dark expanse, spreading a warm blue and gold glow into its surroundings, it shimmers with the stars. It is beautiful.
A sword cannot be fashioned in the dragon’s image, but jewellery can. He doubts he can capture its vibrance in a lump of metal. He wants to try regardless.

Link should get to cry and hurt and feel but he didn’t get to in the game so I got to write it myself! This game and these headcanons have been rattling around in my brain for a year, I had to get them out. This is primarily about grief, love, the hurting heart of a hero and the challenges he must endure.

“Well, well,” the Great Deku Tree says, “it’s you.”
There is a moment where Link cannot deny his identity. A fraction of a moment where he feels it, feels it all - the generations and generations balanced upon his shoulders, that every breath in the world depends on him. He feels the light breeze twist through the clearing, he feels each fiber of his clothing against his skin, the knots wrenching within his chest, his breath against his chapped lips.
He feels the careful precipice that existence stands on. The crow flies and the vine grows and the child smiles at the sun in the morning because of him- because of him.

He stared at the corpses as if seeing death for the first time, spellbound by the red tendrils that rose from them like steam. His legs shook; his stomach roiled with sickness; it took him three tries to slide the Master Sword into its scabbard. Zelda drew closer, her brow creased with worry, a faint aura of light still shimmering around her as she reached for his shoulder.
The Gloom recoiled from her touch, and Link flinched back, clutching his arm, digging his nails in again to feel something, anything else. She snatched her hand away as though burned, staring at him through the darkness.
“Link?” she repeated, her voice shrinking down to something small and scared. “Can you answer me?”

Link was enchanted from the first note she sang. It was an old song, one that was written in the year before the Calamity struck, but one that was still widely beloved in this age—a “classic,” people called it. But as Zelda sang the opening lines, it was like he was hearing it for the first time. Her voice was as bright as birdsong and as warm as a summer afternoon, ringing out from her chest and floating softly on the wind. For all the time he spent at her side, Link wondered why he had never heard the princess sing; he knew he never would have forgotten a voice like that had he heard it before.

Her voice washed over him as he knelt before her. Even the formality of ceremony could not entirely conceal the disdain laden in her voice. His hips were straining and his knee was aching from being pressed into the cold, hard stone beneath him, but he did not dare move. Instead, he distracted himself from his discomfort by staring at the hem of his tunic resting at the top of his thighs—pristinely cerulean, nearly the color of his own eyes.
The idea that Zelda had crafted it so carefully for him was one that Link still could not wrap his head around.

Summary
Whenever the urge strikes him, he can dive off of the island and land onto his soulmate’s back, racing across the skies to wherever his heart desires. More often than not, that desire guides him to glide next to his serpentine companion. Its eyes are a striking purple and blue, glossing over him like he is not there as it surveys the vastness of blue in its path. He keeps a measured distance between himself and the creature – despite his fascination, he knows nothing about how it behaves – as he soars next to its head. It makes his flights less lonely.
Every once in a while, Zelda will join him. She will fly on the other side of the dragon’s head, hidden from his view by the mane of golden strands. Hours are spent like this, together, with their friend, basking in the quiet comfort.
When he is seventeen, that all changes. Zelda falls. Link is the goddess’ chosen agent. Fi leads him on a mission.
