The air was cool, the breeze from the ocean below them filling the air with salt. Katara could taste it on her tongue, was breathing it in, surrounded by it, by water engulfing her because of the humidity. She always felt powerful whenever she was in humid environments, as if at any moment she could pull water straight out of the air to defend herself against whatever foe might arrive.
It was getting to be nighttime, the sun setting and inching its way further and further towards the horizon, until it would eventually sink beneath it, and they would be enveloped in darkness. Pink and orange and purple hues filled the sky, and Katara was admiring it as she stood on the balcony of her bedroom, on the second floor of their house on Ember Island.
Ozai’s house. How strange it felt, to be in a place that their enemy was so familiar with, had spent summers vacationing with his family at. With every step she took, every wall she touched, she could feel the dark history of the place.

He would live for her, burn for her, die for her, love her with every fiber of his being, and he would hope for nothing in return - and he could not ask for more.

The sight of a blue eyed girl almost burned to a crisp was enough proof for that.He wouldn’t make that mistake twice. Not when it wasn’t even reciprocated.

Summary
All that time, all the years in high school and through college Zuko had prevailed in compartmentalising when it came to his relationship with Sokka. Because they were friends and Zuko didn’t know what he’d do if he lost Sokka because of something stupid like feelings. So he’d often put his thoughts of how handsome or how pretty Sokka looked in a little velvet box. He’d tie his imaginary love letters in a bow, and catch the butterflies in his stomach with a net for safekeeping.
Some people might call it unhealthy. Zuko just thought of it as a coping mechanism.
